I will chime in and say that "classic" Summoners/Summons from Final Fantasy games like III, IV (Black Mage), V, VI, VII, VIII, IX (White Mage) and X are pretty much flashy Black Magic spells (FFIX even takes away the summon and just keeps the effect, unless you have Boost or something). FFXI's SMN made the player completely reliant on their pets (so they did nothing most of the time, since pet skills cost MP, which was constantly ticking down. Though they were a back up WHM). FFXII had the summons run with you, though they had their own gambits (ZJS allowed you to control them, though) and FFXIII... a bit of FFXII and a bit of its own spin.
If Egi's were removed and all SMN skills were trance, you're basically asking for a Black Mage with different animations and weapon.

Summoner is a proxy Black Mage they cast Black Magic spells with different animations.
