I hate to admit this; but, this is how the majority of gamers seem to think. Like the chart for WoW on page 5. Heck, Elin are extremely popular on Tera for a reason.

But like... why dawg. You just explained that people wouldn't play ugly females instead of why you want an only male one.

I already talked about this in the OP; however, I'll tell this again just for you. The major fear I have is if they make a female counterpart (as people don't want to play "ugly" females) they'll make them cute and very human like. This, in return, will make the males look like a different race, so in response they'll most likely dilute the males along with the females to ensure they seem like they come from the same stock.
