Wait, wait, WHAT!?! Those are examples of how other games made races human enough that it doesn't have to have everything "adjusted", and show it is within' Square's realms to make it a reality. What, did you expect us to go and draw this original race for your eyes? Sorry, hunny.
Let me break down your points. Point 1) They need to sell the expansion. I can tell you I'm still paying for the expansion, and it surely isn't Au'ra that makes me want to pay for it, that's for sure. It is the story, content, and new classes. Honestly, Au'ra would be such a small portion of sales due to the fact it's targeting players that already have that archetype. You know, the I'm cute! Teehee! Type. What do I mean? Look at both Miqo'te and Hyru, they both have the "Protect me! I'm a damsel!" look to them, or at least can be made that way.Let's break it down:
1) They need to sell the expansion
2) The expansion has a theme. Dragons.
3) They already have "Mammalian Demi-Beastmen" (Miqo'te)
4) They don't have "reptilian demi-beastmen"
5) the other 2 of the top 4 would be quite a daunting undertaking as you'd have to make multiple versions. With a new race, you have to make 4 options: Clan 1 F, Clan 1 M, Clan 2 F, Clan 2 M. With "half breeds," you either go the lazy route and just introduce one and get called lazy, or you have to make 9 of them (Miqo-Hyur, Roe-Hyur, Lala-Hyur, Lala-Miqo, Lala-Roe, Elezen-Hyur, Elezen-Miqo, Elezen-Lala, Elezen-Roe) which means 18 minimum variations. On the other end, new clans would mean 10 new variations AND getting the "lazy" stigma again since all the new subraces would just be the existing ones with a few new options.
In the end, going with the #4 option was the most viable as it was the most marketable and efficient to do as a first race. In short, they're unique ENOUGH.
Point 2) You do realize they're trying to play off Au'ra as more akin to demons. That point is pretty much moot. It'd be honestly interesting to see in the new expansion that you're going against Ishgard and fighting with the dragons (meaning we wouldn't be allowed in their capital city; however, we'll have access to Ishgard.) The reason why I mention this is due to the fact they'd attempt to kill Au'ra on sight if they were akin to dragons. I personally would find it interesting if they were the children of Shiva, as she did lay with dragons.
Point 3) So? What is that supposed to mean. I hear the cries here saying, "They made Au'ra due to popularity! It's more efficient to make something most people would play." Hrrrmmm, I didn't realize that went out all the drain when they made something that YOU LIKED. Does that mean the purpose of the poll was just for show, they didn't actually mean anything by it?
4)But, they don't have a beastman race either! This is a totally LAME excuse.
5) Like I said, in point three. Why was it an option in the first place if they were just going to have it for show? Were the developers not going to listen to us in the first place, and only go for what was efficient to make? That means the poll was diluted already, not only biased due to the mention of a fan favorite race: Viera. If they were going to make a poll, they should have just went with the option people wanted in the first place.
Also to mention people throwing down the option of Ronso due to their feet. Take a look at the race everyone wanted! "You'd have to adjust all the armor for their feet!" You know, like it is impossible to make human orientated feet for the armor, right?
