    You did not have to complete Zilart prerequisites to access WG.
    You did not have to complete CoP prerequisites to access WG.

    Expansions. Disconnected. Take one path, ignore the rest, that's fine. Whether one of the three was drastically easier is irrelevant. One is not required to access another.

    HOWEVER!

    Rise of the Zilart was the very first expansion to FFXI.

    And lo and behold, prerequisites:

    After defeating the Shadow Lord for nation mission 5-2, you can unlock ZM-1: "The New Frontier"
