Normally we get edited patch notes in advance of server downtime for major patches don't we?

I'm hoping that, given it's (almost) the 9th we should get at least some taster notes by the weekend.

It is a patch. Some things/systems are changing in ARR with the release of the expansion. And there is also a substantial patch that has to occur for all users to make sure that everyone stays compatible i.e. people that don't buy Heavensward are going to still need the files for new jobs, new gear, new abilities, etc. so their game doesn't crash whenever they run into someone with the expansion.
