That's why the elementals can be summoned indefinitely and fight alongside. I think they should keep the "awsome" status for the avatars and not reduce them to "pets".

Edit: anyways, that was a mere suggestion and idea, SE will do what they want with the summoner job and other pet jobs. This is just my opinion on the subject and I think that seeing huge avatars everywhere (the targeting system is already flawed as it is) will just clutter the screen and be in the way of other players, forcing SE to make them smaller and less epic, which will just be another fail.
