I don't think other people having huge sums of gil has much of an effect on new players at all... In most cases, people who have this much gil got it by being frugal and productive; they don't unnecessarily spend gil and they constantly look for and employ the best methods of acquiring gil. Spending more than you make is a sure way to lose gil.

That said, these people keep a close eye on their income, and what they forsee themselves spending gil on. Just recently gil from leves has been reduced dramatically, and this will lead to prices falling, and incomes falling (Its all relative ofcourse, purchasing power would, in this case, be closer to staying the same). Obviously anyone with a large amount of gil just got proportionately richer in buying power.

The point is income levels are the same for everyone, so new players and old players will still have similar incomes now, and their day to day spending will not drastically change in proportion to one another. The only problem is, any really amazing new item that comes out, you can bet your life the richest Eorzeans are going to pay rediculous amounts of gil to get their hands on them ( That is ofcourse if they put that much value in them ). But not randoms spending on gear for regular items, and items they don't naturally compete over either.

This is how I made my coin. Gotta assess your values, utilize assets you have that you don't necessarily need, and be patient with your purchases. Crystals were (and still are) a great gil income, and since the bulk of crafting I do is from leves, I can afford to sell off these items and make a quick few hundred thousand gil per stack.
