I just realized everyone who's against this idea is forgetting an iconic moment in Final Fantasy.

Perhaps one of the most loved Final Fantasy games, and crossdressing was a part of- Ney, Manditory, part of the game.

Please, please tell me that this was mentioned at some point since yesterday.

I think someone made a good point. I think there is at least two kinds of things going on in this thread.

Some people are saying that men should get sexier, prettier, flashier clothes. Girls get all the nice colors and revealing things, and men have very few to choose from. Basically girls are getting all the wardrobe love.

Other are saying that girls have more opportunities to cross dress if they desire, but men have very few options if any. I mean maybe? I know I've seen more girls running around in the suit outfit than I've seen guys running around in that one dress they have. I mean, in western culture, a girl wearing a suit isn't always a gender related thing, it's actually considered kind of stylish at the moment. Probably there'd be more guys running around in a dress if there was one that looked good on them... like form fitting and such. It doesn't have to be called a dress... I mean, like a nice long fitting drape of some kind...a kimono, a long jacket, anything nice and long.

Clothing isn't always about gender, though we shouldn't diminish people who see it that way. Good looking clothes look good on both sexes.

I'm all for men getting some equal love there.

The whole scene was played for comedy. Japanese society often views crossdressing as a joke. You'll note the only person in-game in FFXIV that ever actually crossdresses (that isn't part of a disguise for infiltration, theft, etc.) is ALSO treated as a joke, and the entire scene is played for comedy.
This is also the reason the two most effeminate male characters, whether through style or mannerisms, in the final fantasy universe, Kuja and Kefka, also dress like clowns (evil clowns, but clowns nonetheless. And to see what i mean about Kefka, watch his dissidia cutscenes. Which he shares with Kuja a bit, by the way.)
So yes, if the complaints in this thread were shown to Japanese developers there is a good chance they would be laughing at you.
I'm not saying this is right by any means and i don't agree with it, but trying to find a serious depiction of crossdressing that isn't out of necessity (such as The Rose of Versailles or kabuki and Noh theater where women are expressly forbidden to perform) is very difficult. Not impossible, mind you, as we have instances like "Wandering Son" where it's played straight and for drama, but they're the exception that make the rule.
To put it another way, there have been more instances in Japanese popular culture created in the last few years of brother-sister incest being portrayed positively than there have been for male->female crossdressers. Female->male crossdressers get a bit more slack, but aren't excluded from this. Possibly because "tomboy" is more acceptable by society's standards in general. Takarazuka, which uses all-female casts even for the male roles, being "more fun to watch" than Kabuki and Noh for a lot of audiences, since it's a lot faster paced and more energetic than Noh and Kabuki, might have something to do with this as well. Or this could contribute to Takarazuka's popularity. Causation and/or Correlation is there...somewhere.

I am here to voice my support for this. It is ridiculous that they keep doing this.

If you're going to gender lock the female versions of vanity clothes, then the only reasonable option is to also gender lock the male version. Period.

The problem is that they've *already* released a skirt that male characters can equip ( Plain Long Skirt ), so why can't they make others?

I'll be honest, I wouldn't know about any of that, while Japanese culture interests me and I like things about it - I'm not Japanese, I don't live there and I'm not going to pretend I understand exactly how they feel about specific subjects. I do know that things they were more closed minded too in the past they have become more open too - and like all cultures, their views are constantly changing in respect to different outlooks and issues.

It's not so much why they would allow it or not allow it, or what they might laugh at us for asking - but the fact that it's been done before in FF games (for whatever reason) and obviously people would like to see it again in this one. Plus the fact that guys really do get kinda overlooked in the gear department while people who play females whine that 'oh why do guys get that and I can't have it' and they get it. I think it's time that glamour type gear started opening up for the guys.

I'm not basing this on anything cultural or saying why or why it should not happen based off X's culture. It's just fair to the gamers. Anyway if guys in this game can wear flower hats and green leopard print bikini bottoms as a glamour, why can't guys wear a skirt and crop top? lol Anyway, the WoD stuff has guys wearing skirts and robes, even one of my friends said the caster outfit looked like a dress on him.

Anyway, so yeah - it's just far. If players that play female characters can get whatever they want, why can't people who play guy characters. I say let them have it.

A central difference between sexes is useful for a multitude of reasons, if players were given the choice to dress in whatever gear they wanted the thematic appearances of each race/sex/job combination would quite quickly crumble. It's already a hassle with the bikini-tanks and whatnot.

Some limiters are a very sensible and reasonable approach to the scenario.
