I maintain the fact that it's not a bug. It's simply a short-sighting in features - along the same line as Auto Attack and the lack thereof. There are many games that cannot interface with a gamepad properly. While support for one may be available; the game still only loads peripherals only once and that's at boot-up. Other than that, the game must be coded to search for and intercept new hardware so long as that hardware is recognized by the game on an individual level. For example; in DDO, the Xbox 360 controller only associated with the game once at start-up until enough players demanded that it's logic be added to the game's peripherals awareness. It wasn't until Module 8 that they added not only the Xbox controller, but playstation 3, madcats, logitech and many other companies that design PnP game controllers. DDO will also recognize any USB headset I connect, however, it won't recognize my Bluetooth if I pair it after the game has launched. Again; it's on an individual device level. FFXIV may already have logic for many USB PnP controllers. However, the importance of the fact that someone may disconnect that controller, then reconnect it later while the game is running, is a case few and far between. Odds are we won't see a logic for controllers until after the PS3 launch which has been postponed for God knows how long.

All of that, though, begs a question. First, a statement. I found the switchy that makes the keyboard "Chat Only".
Now - if they have that feature implemented - which screams "We know you use other things besides a keyboard", why the hell is there no controller logic? On top of that. Why is key-mapping limited to a sub-exe that cannot be run parallel with the game. Mapping keys would be great in-game for the controller!
And while I'm on this rant, Square, while I'm using a controller I cannot 'Execute' Battle Regime. I can put myself into Regime but I cannot set it off. If you'd like some information on that; BR via the controller mapping "FFXIVconfig.exe" is associated with the "Emote List" mapping. That will allow me to begin the BR and stack me action, but pressing it again does not execute the BR after all players have stacked. Please remedy this when you get around to the game controller fiasco.

    And since it just now occurred to me before anyone takes out my throat;
Yes, your post-modern Xbox wireless controller works just dandy with your old-school games that didn't know what an xbox was when they were made. That's because controller support is assumed by Windows and Windows can do whatever it wants; including, but not limited to, working properly.
In this day and age every piece of software now has the cahones to out-maneuver Windows and supply it's own support for this, that and the other thing to prevent misuse of the software's design. Of course, I'm speaking of Bottting. Leaving controller configurations and peripherals in Windows' hands allows bot-making and other such malintent to occur more easily and Square (or any other software company for that matter) is forbade to reign in the power of Microsoft's Micromanagement. This is how you wind up with the Siamese Twin Software Syndrome. Two things doing the exact same thing but each is operated by a different BRAIN.

I too have been getting more and more annoyed by this, almost angry. Now the fact that FFXI dose not have this issue now, it did for a long time. Longer than it should have. I played the game from its NA launch and the issue of a disconected controller or a wireless controller power off wasent fixed until about 6 years after launch. One work around was a very popular unauthorized third party program (I think we all at least heard of it) it corrected this issue a long time B4 SE. As for XIV's issue with this I did submit a detailed email to the technical dept and got nowhere. In the response email they said it was a problem with the controller itself working incorrectly >. I think we all know that line is complete BS.

Most recently. Fable III allows re association with my controller. Its not the controller. We know that. SE's avoiding it.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

It sucks the only workaround for this is to have a play and charge kit to plug into your controller and keep it going. Was good until my cord died this week. Didn't I see a Xbox controller during the making of video of this game . What gives? Please fix this

It might somewhat obvious but I wanted to add that this issue does not just affect Wireless game pads.

I use an older wired USB MadCatz - Xbox360 clone controller that has a tendency to lose calibration from time to time.

The other night it the right stick got stuck moving the camera up so I disconnected the USB cable while still in game in a vain attempt that it would recalibrate itself to the default position when it was reconnected.

When I plugged the controller back in FFXIV did not recognize it. I had to log out via the KB/mouse. When I restarted the game everything was fine.

Not a deal breaking issue but certainly annoying.

I want to add that this issue affects me as well.

FFXI has it worse for me. If the gamepad is set to enabled and isn't found, the game will stutter every couple of seconds searching for it until it finds it.

I want to add my voice to this as well.

I know the devs are very busy, and I'm thankful for all the hard work they are doing. However, this is a very serious problem with the game, rendering a large number of controllers basically unusable in FFXIV. I hope that a fix can be worked on as soon as possible to allow for wireless controllers to be picked back up by the game when they are turned on.

It isn't that they become unusable. Its just that its a major inconvenience to log all the way out, and restart the program, then log back in just to re associate your controller. When every other gamepad enabled game lets you just push the button to power it on and Bamf your online.
