First, congratulations on that necrobump, it was pretty epic.

The reason why everyone was friendly and worked together in FFXI was because the game required parties for everything. If you were known to be a dick, no one would invite you and you couldn't complete any content. In FFXIV we have the opposite i.e. everything can be done solo and if you need a party, you can just group with some randoms, still be a dick, and no one will care because you'll never see them again.

I've heard that in the Japanese forums they've raised the idea of server only DF, so clearly it's something that some are still interested in.

Actually this game forces you to group up for a lot of content, a lot of friends from other mmos were a bit freaked out when they saw that the main storyline was gated behind group content for leveling up.
Anyway if you pf a lot and act like a nob you aren't going to be pf'ing long in ff14 because everyone will block you from farms and clears.
