Well the special Au Ra Iris-eye make them look somewhat unique in my opinion. With a good beastly glow in their eyes they don't look like Hyur to me.
It's sad tough you can deactivate that Iris and many will *takes a glimp at the "show your Au Ra-Thread". Without the special eyes yeah, they look like Hyur. Nothing special.
I'll never understand the argument of adjusting all armor for a more beast-like race.
Example 1: Ronso
1) What about their face!!!
1A) Their muzzles are quite small so it'll fit fine in helmets
2) What about their feet!!!!
2A) Their feet can be slightly modified to better suit the gear
Otherwise, they're one of the perfect races to translate into games. They had a character that assisted you in FFX, so I think JP wouldn't mind so much.
Number 2 contender! Moogles!
What can I say? They're like Lalafells with a more beast appeal.
Number 3: Shadow Lord.
This character you'd just have to adjust the horn size, and possible allow small spikes against his back. Otherwise, I'd say good to go.
I feel it is fully possible for them to make a beast race.
After all, this is what they made for concept art. ~.^

Except the Ronso race has digitigrade feet and that would make designing boots a pain for the design team since now they have to have a second version of foot gear for a race that has a different skeletal structure and they also have to take animations into consideration. I don't know why people keep insisting that it would be "just a minor adjustment" when there's several other factors that come into play. Just because something is possible doesn't mean it's always feasible or at least universal.
I used Second Life a lot (laugh at me all you want to) and I had to deal with avatar models of all shapes and sizes; sometimes it was a major pain to get my character a new set of clothes or armor because some creators didn't make said clothes that suited my avatar's shape. Even if I found something that was pretty close to what I wanted, it was back to the drawing board if the animations didn't make it look right, especially if there's clipping involved.

Popularity should not be the deciding factor in creating a new race (if you've succeeded in already making a popular race, then there is no longer a point to make a new race. You're just remaking something popular, which is going to make you appear lazy). A new race should be something new in appearance.
FFXI races, which the FFXIV races borrowed from (Tanaka's fault, not Yoshi-P's) are more unique in design and appearance compared to XIV's.

I didn't ask a question, only gave my opinion.
But to comment on the popularity issue, I think adding a race with completely different looking clans could be the answer. Kinda like Hyur is right now. For example a corrupted harpy looking clan and an angelic human faced clan for a new bird race. They could've went that route with Xaela and Raen but perhaps it's too much work. :/

And you forget that you also have to create something that will resonate with a lot of people while also keeping within the restrictions we have of the current races for the sake of having armor fit everyone equally. New for the sake of being different isn't always a genuine plan.Popularity should not be the deciding factor in creating a new race (if you've succeeded in already making a popular race, then there is no longer a point to make a new race. If people play the race, then you did a good job. Chances are something more bestial in appearance would still be more popular than Roegadyn AND Elezen (currently the two least popular races in game).
If SE continue to make new races based on what is popular, the game is only going to have cute girls that get smaller every expansion and cool boys that... honestly, I have no idea what they'll become as expansions go on (possibly more androgynous?).

The real reason we cant have a more original race.

I'd rather they not waste resources on making something that hardly anyone plays, but that's just my opinion. Though, it would be interesting to have more diverse races; provided that they don't break the lore.
