No no, Higashikata's right. People assume that because it's a big thing of fire that takes up a lot of space it'll be aoe, but that's missing out on Yoshi saying it's single-target. They see pictures and make assumptions without all of the facts. The two IV spells are for BLM's single-target dps, not for aoe-ing. That'll still be Flare's job.

the vocal minority is pushing for summoners to have more "classic" summons. They don't care about the actual problems that needed to be addressed for the actual job. A lot of SMN are just fine with the job, both in terms of how it functions as a DOT based job or how it looks, to a certain extent at least.
Most of the SMN mains are willing to see what these new abilities give us in terms of damage output or what the egi's will do. The people who like summoner for what it does and can do are either too busy playing or have ran out of gas trying to explain how a monster summon won't make things better. You can make a detailed summoning action of Ifrit Egi that is like a mini version of him, turns the sky into fire and declares he is here in chat box for all to see, but in the end if he still has the ability that gives just himself counter..what has really changed?
I believe the egi's aren't great, actually while I was playing first time through I thought it would be nice if we got lesser summons, like what we had out in FFXII. We didn't, but that won't make me change my job. Some will change to BLM, those are the fan boys, some will stay on summoner and complain about how the egi's just don't look right. I dunno, I've ran out of fumes for this. As a person who mains summoner, I am a bit ashamed of the SMN vocal community and what they ask to change. I just don't want the teams to start focusing on the looks of the job needed some actual foundation rework.
I am very excited for 3.0 I am happy with what I have seen so far. I believe the egi battle should be fought after the dealings with the actual job mechanics. But, I'm done we can let the masses beg for their new awesome looking pets, who knows..maybe they'll get them. Good luck to you SMN's in 3.0!

Wizarus, I don't think Higa was saying that as an insult directed at you, but at the people who made you think fire iv would be a flare replacement.

So you basically want ffxiv smn to be like ffxi smn? As I recall, the summons were scaled to the players race. They weren't as big as the originals, but they were larger than the player. It really didn't add clutter to the game, but then again they didn't have the same kind of particle effects.
The biggest difference in ffxi is all of the smn skills was through the summon. You couldn't do anything outside of using your summon (in terms of your main job/class...not sub job lol). Some people loved this, some people hated it. They already tried to make ffxiv like ffxi in 1.0, and it obviously failed (wasn't popular enough).
There is plenty of people who use ifrit, and can pull higher dps...if the situation allows it (dragon kick ftw). Garuda ends up winning most of the time, because she is ranged.
This. Best part about this whole thing is that there is no "classic" summoner type in the series either. Every one of the games did it different, some they didn't exist at all. All of the times, except two (X and XI), you didnt even control the summon and were a half assed black mage.
This whole " SMN is not an actual summoner" is amusing since it's just a bunch of people trying to tack XIs system on older games where they didn't exist.
Td;dr: This isn't XI. Your "system" won't be in this game. Play SMN as it is or roll something else, because it isn't changing anytime soon.
More people asking to be Yuna, when will it end...

Fun fact, FFX released almost 14 years ago. Older than many that play this game, probably.
FFVII is 18 now.
FFXI is also more than 13 years old.
This idea of just having a summon run around and punch stuff is very old, and one can say, outdated. Neither is it the only incarnation of summoners in FF games.
A classic Summoner is a Black Mage that specializes in Summoning so it's a more explosive Black Mage which is what I assume people want. Looking at the direction of Summoner in 3.0 its wouldn't be suprising if SE added an Incarnate Summoning rotation and have players transform into the Primal at lvl 70. They gave Summoner's the ability to summon the power of Bahamut through Dreadwyrm trance so it's not out of the question for them give us the ability to summon primals with Incarnate Summoning.
