Now I'm the first to say I hated blitzball, it was a horrible minigame that was poorly explained. Thankfully you only had to do it the one time, after that I never touched it again.

However, I think that they have the right idea with it. XIV needs some kind of alternative PVP mode for players to go against one another and some kind of sport event that doesn't involve players killing each other is actually something unique. There are lots of MMO's where you can play team deathmatch, but an objective based pvp minigame with strategy where you don't have the option to just kill the other players? You could do something with that.

I was thinking Cid and co could invent a small mouth piece that allows you to breath underwater. Maybe they find some Allagan tech, or pinch it from the empire. Maybe even Novv & co have a way to allow land walkers to breath underwater.

Plenty of possibilities to help explain it.

Or give reference to Oxyale from FF1. This item allows you to breath underwater so you can access the water temple.

I remember when I first bought FF10 and I was so excited to play Blitzball and I tried so hard to figure out the rules and such, but it turned out to be hugely disappointing for me. I can't really remember why exactly (this was back in the PS2 days lol), it was just boring and I think I didn't even understand how I won exactly lol.
