I thought it would just be a check box like what WoW has, but they keep saying it's a completely different client which leads you to believe that the full game will need to be downloaded for it.The DX11 client only changes the game engine at that currently is 18MB in size so expect the DX11 version around the same size. There's no change to the assets and those are the things that take up more space.
I expect the DX11 client to be released at the same time as the 3.0 one goes live. The Dx11 client will probably be a checkbox in the launcher.

And as mentioned, the client is just an engine.
Having to redownload the entire game for an engine alteration is ludicrous, especially since most of those files (such as sound files, of which the game has a TON of) have absolutely nothing to do with graphics.
It's in SE's best interest to NOT do so.
When you check that box, you need to restart the entire client in WoW.
The DX9 and DX11 there are actually two different clients, it just loads the appropriate one to the state of the checkbox.
The DX11 in WoW came with a patch, So we never really need to download it as a separate thing.
I'm fairly sure the 3.0 patch that gives us the Expansion content will include the Dx11 client.

I thought by the title this thread had a link to it inside..haha. I would like to think they will release it before early access...or whenever they put up the expansion patch download...
The DX version is in the same executable, it's the 32 and 64 bit versions of WoW that have separate files.

Ok I still don't think people are understanding this so let me try to elaborate.
Your FFXIV game at this time is about 14.5 GB in data. Of this 14.5GB, about 17MB is the actual client. The other 14,483 MB is the assets, which include textures, sounds, scripts, icons, and all other data needed to create FFXIV. When you start FFXIV, you open the launcher (patcher) which checks to see if you need to patch. The launcher then starts the client.
In the DX11 model, nothing is changed except we get a second client, and you pick which one you run through the launcher. Downloading the DX11 client doesnt force you to re-download the entire game, nor does it delete the old client, it simple adds another executable file to your system, so like others have stated, probably like 25 MB judging from the HW benchmark.

I do hope you're right, Itseotle ^^ It makes a lot more sense than having a completely separate install folder and everything. I just hope SE is as sensible :p
(Basically, what I'm saying that even if your explanation is the one that makes the most sense, and that actually works, we still don't know how SE is going to go about this. Various companies have gone with crazy and illogically roundabout methods of doing things before, so it's not like there's no precedent...)
