If tanks and healers were able to deal the same damage as dps it would essentially make dps obsolete since a tank could have all the defense in the world and healers can...heal, why take a squishy dps?

Since all the old classes/jobs have their roots somehow in 1.0 (I guess this also applies to some extend to Rog/NIN because class + job crystal system) I think it is possible that the upcoming ones, which are totally new developed will play quite different and feel more fleshed out in the mechanics department. Maybe the updates in the addon will put the old ones more in line with the new ones, but what I´ve read so far, especially the stuff about the Astrologian leads me to believe they will be a bit more complex then what we already have.

This is where the crafty ninja reigns supreme, waiting for the off-tank to be in an advantageous position to make them the main tank and table flip the group.

Contributing some extra damage is one thing. With as much as the devs have said they are sticking with the whole trinity of class roles, if healers or tanks actually were to start eclipsing full DPS jobs, you can believe adjustments would be incoming.
Nothing wrong with a little lateral progression after all, especially in endgame settings. A bit of extra 'oomph' here and there will make clears smoother.

This makes WHM and SCH pretty appealing.
