If SE continue to make new races based on what is popular, we're only going to have cute girls and cool boys that are 99% human. We need more strange/ugly/unique things to play as.

If SE continue to make races based on what's popular, they'll always please the majority of people. Why on earth would they make something that isn't popular? "Oh, let's make something ugly barely anyone will like!" really doesn't sound like a great idea for a business.

Also, I think I heard somewhere that that Japanese fanbase prefers races that are "human with bestial features", hence why we have the races the way they are now. From another standpoint, having playable races be mostly human means less work for the gear design team.
