I don't think that was the cause for the drop in quality.... when a cie becomes bigger, most of the time the quality goes away.... things are harder to control and they become sort of game factories where they value quantity over quality a la EA.

Would not make a difference, the square of old is gone, the square of today, is just a shell of what it was back then <.<

Square only published Breath of Fire because they were responsible for the localization into English. Capcom having no experience with localizing a text heavy game basically licensed square to do it for them. Square was responsible for localization and promotion for the game, and as such they got to publish it under their name.

In terms of Square EA, the deal was that EA would publish Square games in the U.S. and Square would publish EA games in Japan. It was largely one sided, the Square games doing much better in the U.S. than the EA games did in Japan. When the merger with Enix went through Square bought back their shares from EA.

That being said, Square since it's inception has made games with limited, niche appeal. Even the final fantasy games, though admittedly they've had the broadest market, have still been mostly niche.

Square, in japan atleast has always been a bit of a juggernaut acquiring new development teams through mergers and takeovers and then producing their games under the square name.

Only recently have they started doing that same practice worldwide with the acquisition of Eidos.

The most likely scenario is as Onidemon suggested, defensive branding...

Though an interesting point, Xbox freedom is jumping on the rumormill with speculation on a possible parting of Enix and Square.

Seems Square isn't the only license they are seeking. Looks like they are trying to get a separate enix name as well.

I remember heavenly blade having something like that. I didn't mind it too much for movement, but I didn't like it when combat was broken up by QTEs. In FF8 I always set trigger to auto.

No More Heroes kinda got away with it in finishing moves, but even those got repetitive.

From what I understand its rare the fight will even have them.

Also Auto-Trigger would not trigger the bonus damage for basic melee attacks just on the limit breaks.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Yeah call it SQUARE again like old school Rad Racer with the red triangle under the A. Then I can add that to my routine of cartoons and cereal and relive my childhood to the fullest.

I am 50/50 with this statement. I would like to think that this means they are going to try to go back to their roots and by doing so something along the lines of Squaresoft will be born again. Only problem with that apparently all these gaming sites seem to think JRPGs are a dying breed and I think that not be the case. Games go in cycles just like everything else atm WRPGs have taken over but I JRPGs will always be around we just need a new wave of story weavers and good old fashioned JRPG elements and hopefully we will see them come back to their former glory. Time will only tell.
