I think neutrality, lack of a want to cause a civil war in the Eorzea Alliance, and our loyalties to the Scions are what ultimately prevent us from just going and hiding in Gridania/Limsa during this whole ordeal. By the way what's the issue with duskwights and Gridania anyways? I'm not so deep into the racial lore exactly so I'm curious.

Duskwights can live in Grid, there are some working there, however the majority are the bandits that you beat up for fates in the south shroud. Same goes for moon keeper cats.

Ah, so they face issues in Gridania due to the strong poacher/bandit presence with the Coeurlclaws and Redbellies (I think think that's the name of the prominent Elezen bandit group in the South Shroud.)

Indeed, you are correct, Samcaesar. The Redbellies are the Duskwight Elezen group of bandits in the South Shroud. Duskwights are looked down upon because they live in subterranean caves, and are oftentimes forced to steal what they need to survive. Due to this bad blood between them and Wildwoods, Duskwights aren't very welcome in Gridania, as their criminal activity is seen by the Wildwoods as drawing the wrath of the Elementals (also known as the Greenwrath if I recall correctly). There are some exceptions of course, with some Duskwights in Gridania looking for and doing honest work.

-EDIT BECAUSE I ALSO WANTED TO POST THIS-

I am also frustrated about our characters supposedly being from outside of Eorzea. If our characters aren't from Eorzea, then WHERE IN THE WORLD are we from? We have virtually NO information about any locations outside of Eorzea, so where could we say they're from? Where else in the world do hyur, elezen, miqo'te, roegadyn and lalafell live? If we look at the lore, it states that all of these races MIGRATED TO Eorzea. This tells me that there are hardly any of them, or none at all, outside of Eorzea.

This is why some rp'ers (myself included) have said, "Screw this, I'm just making my character from *insert city-state* and bending lore a little because I have to to make their story make sense." It's maddening. Take my character Mimiru here for example. She is a native-born Gridanian, and not from 'elsewhere', because, well, where would she be from since we have virtually no information on the outside world? I had to bend the lore for her. Let me explain what I did:

Mimiru was born in Gridania. She is twenty years old at the time of the original game, participates in the Battle of Carteneau, and becomes a Warrior of Light along with her friends. Five years later she awakens, along with her friends, and they return to their home cities(cue the beginning of ARR).

Now, here's where I changed things up: Instead of everyone forgetting about her, they remember her, HOWEVER, they DO NOT remember that she participated in the Battle of Carteneau, thus still explaining how she is a Warrior of Light in a way. And by 'everyone', I mean everyone. The people of Gridania, the Scions, and anyone else who has met her remembers her. So with these tweaks I made, it explains how she is a Gridanian native, and yet also a Warrior of Light.

I hope this makes sense to you all, and provides you with an idea of what I did to explain Mimiru's background. I'm not sure how acceptable this would be to any of you fellow roleplayers, but it was the best I could think of, without completely destroying lore. I have not had the chance to roleplay with Mimiru, so I haven't been able to flesh-out every detail, but I think this is a fairly decent explanation for her story.

Migrating to Eorzea doesn't neccesarily mean that the races don't exist outside it. For one Garlemald is NOT part of Eorzea itself, and yet most likely its citizens are Hyur, or atleast related to them (I'm not sure if the whole "unable to use magic" thing makes them a different race from Hyur, or possible a different "clan" like Mid and Highlanders are.)

As well, you are givin the option to say whether you have been to the city-state you are going to before, and I always thought of taking that as giving players reign to say yes, they may have lived/been born there before, or in one of the other city-states. Ultimately though, your past before the start of the game doesn't matter outside of Legacy for 2.0, but when it comes down to it personal headcannons for your own characters will be supersceded by the story. You have to essentially work around it, even if some things you are sure your character would never do.

Well not forcing you to be from somewhere already in the game helps with RP because it gives you the freedom to make up your own background and reason for becoming an adventurer heading to the more lucrative city states. What it doesn't let you do with the story is turn your character into some unstoppable Mary Sue.

But you aren't one. It's stated repeatedly that adventurers are not citizens of their city-states and that they do come from Eorzea at all.

I'm really not a fan of that honestly, it makes forming a backstory next to impossible for roleplayers. It doesn't make much sense in the context of the story either, like where could we have come from, especially when we know next to nothing of the outside world?

Exactly. It's very likely the races are found all over the rest of the world.
The idea that they migrated to Eorzea gives more credence to the races living outside Eorzea as well than it takes away. It's not even their original land.
Eorzea is basically a country of immigrants. I wouldn't be surprised if each of the races had homeland all to their own.

The Domans are another example of Hyur-type race outside of Eorzea.
It does, admittedly, take away what RPers have to work with in terms of backstory. The PC basically grew up anywhere other than where we actually have solid information on (excluding Garlemald and such).
That does give some freedom as well, at least until the rest of the world gets revealed (if that's ever the case).
