I didn't play during 1.0 but I have some friends who did and I remember it being a MUCH bigger part of the original storyline. Like, it was super important to have those and they were super special items that took really important readings. And only cool people (the Scions) could have them.

I actually played during the beta test before 1.0, and if you started in Gridania, the opening sequence took you on airplane crash where you meet Yda and Papalymo and they actually lose that mask and it's part of the storyline to help them retrieve it.

Seems like the importance of that mask got lost in the Calamity and it became trivialized.

Actually, those goggles only appeared at the start of ARR. The Scions did not have them in v1.

How I understand it, the googles are instruments that allow the user to see the aether flow. Maybe invented after the calamity or shortly before it.
