Given that flying mounts are gonna be used in all the new zones (after clearing them the first time), will be twice as fast as ground mount, and we seem unlikely to have much reason to return to the original lands for extended periods of time...

Are we gonna see the wow thing all over again? Ground mounts become unused and useless, hard earned mounts never seen, and everything new flies for some inexplicable reason even if it just treads air somehow.

I like the idea of the floating continent, but I have a lot of misgivings about flying mounts and what they do to an mmo and the expectations them bring. Why farm the cool ponies, soon getting new themes, if we are just gonna fly instead after the first week?

Use my Gryphon to reaching floating platforms, use my Fenrir when I'm running on said platforms. I don't see the issue.

Square said flying mounts won't run as fast as ground mounts (I think?) but their flying speed outclasses the speed of ground mounts greatly.

Flying Mounts Speed modificators were set at 0,9 for land and 2,0 for air (they said they might increase air Speed)
if we asume that the speedmodificator for normal Mounts is 1,0 then the old Mounts would be 11,111111111111111111111111...% faster on land

Except Flying Mounts move slower on ground than normal mounts, and you have to be attuned to the area before you can begin flying.

So when you first enter the 8 new zones, you are going to be firmly on the ground for the most part. Flight is a reward for fully exploring and "clearing" the zone. With zones 50-100% bigger than the vanilla areas, at level 60 I'd much rather appreciate being able to fly over these zones than be stuck on the ground where the level 57 trash mobs are going to be putting heavy on my mount for 20 SECONDS despite not even being able to hit hard enough to beat my natural HP regen.

Yeah, I can totally see how giving players a new means of exploration could ruin a game. Forget WoW. Look at all of the other MMOs that have flying mounts and run fine.
