And that's dumber than having the SAME skill rotation for every single fight? It's not like you can even mix things up because there aren't even any spells to mix things up with. What they've done as a result is turn every class into a dull grey area with no real identity of its own, borrowing a little taster of everyone else's in order to make it 'accessible'.
Skills which were element based had advantages and disadvantages. It was never a catch-all solution, and some of the more creative bosses mixed up their elements during combat, forcing you to adapt on the fly. Some even absorbed various elements and used them for their own ends. It took away a huge portion of the game in my opinion, and a key element of gameplay which has been a staple since the NES days. Odd how FFXI never had these issues... and yes, people are always going to compare ARR to FFXI since they're the only Final Fantasy MMO's in existence.
