i read through this... and i suppose something like "Rule Magic" could explain it, which would theoretically allow the instantaneous appearance of the chocobo. and then there is the "Summon Magic", but that wouldn't explain the instant appearance.

I ultimately fail to see the point of the question. Are you expecting a forum mod to ask Yoshi-P this all important question? Will it bring you some sort of closure? Is it torturing you that badly?yeah, but that is gameplay. and this is indeed an MMO, where things like that are naturally simplified, because of the massive scale of things. same reason why many types of gear and weapons have clipping issues. not only would it take forever to implement the accuracy for that, it would also cost the clients more system resources. but this is a cinematic and an actual part of the story we are talking about.
If you want a simple answer, then as someone above said... magic. It's a fantasy world where you can summon elemental gods using the planet's life blood, drop meteors from the sky, and imprison dragon gods in artificial satellites in space. Our bond with our chocobo was so strong that we learned to read each other's minds and upon establishing ourselves on the corporeal planes that mental link was opened once more, bringing our faithful chocobos who just so happen to have psychic abilities to our side!
Edit: Well damn, this explanation is so much better.
/thread.All your mounts are actually always behind you. You just don't see them because when you turn, they quickly sneak behind you again. That's how they always appear immediately when you summon. And that's why they could appear immediately 5 years into the future---because they were right behind the warriors of light all the time anyway, so they got sent to the future as well.
Beware. They are right behind you right this minute, too.

Because as stinky as Chocobos are, a Highlander male stuck in the void for years smells much worse and by thals balls my chocobo found me.i see. while that is interesting, it still doesn't add much logic to it. how would their chocobo's know PRECISELY where to be? (they don't, because the quote says they were searching.) and it's not like they can arrive in an instant. they just got lucky to be in the right spot? or can chocobo's hear whistles over an infinite distance with an ability to teleport to that location?
Would still like my chocobo to get a toggle /legacymark, and make the armor a barding - I don't like that my fighting chocobo is technically not my legacy chocobo or that somehow the mark makes him incapable of fighting. First Eorzean problems I know, but I don't like~ lol.
Also another answer/suggestion for above is that regardless of all your teleporting and wild misfit adventures you can whistle your chocobo so the issue was/is present even without this void nonsense; therefore, I think you should just make a little lore about the bond between master and chocobo and that they get a feeling of where you are (special ability/chocobo magic), and the moment you appeared in Eorzea again your chocobo came running.

They 'asked" a Ishgard Astrologian about the precise place to be, just that.
*Don't argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

lol no. i am not expecting anything like that. and it isn't torturing. but it does leave me itching at my head every time that the cinematic plays. sometimes i get there to the main menu, and decide to roll a smoke. the cinematic is pretty darn epic, so i don't mind watching, or listening to the music, while rolling a smoke.
at any rate, i never stressed an extreme importance to the question. it was merely a curious subject to me, and just wanted to see if there was an actual explanation to it. or if someone had a theory. all-in-all, i greatly appreciate everything everyone has added here to this. there have been some very interesting replies. (and some humorous ones too)

It's a JRPG, the story isn't supposed to make sense. Just go with it or skip cut scene :P

When I press my Legacy Chocobo button on my hotbar, he comes for me, no matter where I am.i see. while that is interesting, it still doesn't add much logic to it. how would their chocobo's know PRECISELY where to be? Why would the opening cutscene be any different?

Nice.. I didn't know that.Any 1.0 player can easily explain this. They summoned their legacy chocobos.
"In the five years following your sudden disappearance from the Carteneau Flats, your ever-faithful chocobo spent each waking moment galloping across the realm in search of his lost master. His myriad adventures are nothing less than fantastical and heartbreaking...but that is a story for another day."
It'd be awesome if they added a mini game for that aspect using your chocobo as the main character. Either like FF8's chocobo mini game or Chocobo's weird dungeon series.
If you were to really want to overthink it here as some viable solutions.
1. When they exit the forest the blackmage is pointing at something. Perhaps that something is their chocobos wandering the fields.
2. There is no sense of how long it took the WoL's chocobo to appear or if he actually had to try calling more than once all you see is the call and the next scene of the chocobos running towards the Warrior of Light. Nothing gives the allusion that the chocobo magically appeared from nowhere.
