You have the duty finder making long term friendships impossible, super fast speed runs so no one can type in chat or get to known each other, and 90% of the game solo-able (leveling, mainstory) or faceroll (everything but coil) easy that no communication is require. What do you think will happen?

The only socialization you'll find is in LS' and FCs, and even that can be finicky where you have 20 people online and no one is talking.

    Y'know what? Storytime:

A while ago, whilst working on my Animus Books I noticed I had to once again travel the length of Haukke Manor in order to obtain the soul of Lady Amandine for my Curtana. Having been in the manor an uncountable number of times before I somewhat dreaded travelling in there once again.

As I queue'd up in progress and hoped I'd be in a group at the boss (that never happens for me), I sat back and wondered what I could do to make doing Haukke interesting, because going in and doing another completely dead run would likely put me to sleep. That's when I decided just what I was going to do.

As the queue popped I typed up my initial introduction.

"Hello and Welcome to Haukke Manor. I will be your tour guide and tank for your mission, Wournsfeik Untawhasyn. If you notice me pulling any of the hazards into a side room do not hesitate to fall in line behind me to protect yourself."

I spent the dungeon acting as a real estate salesman, pretending various portions of the dungeon needed to be pointed out like how the cage in the dungeon basement was there for 'ambiance' and commenting on how nice a room could be for a child's bedroom. By the dungeon's end everybody was having a fantastic time and generally laughing together.

I specifically recall a quote from one of my unfortunate speed run killed victims as being 'Wournsfeik, you rock so hard.' sometime in the midst of that manor.

Had I not done that, I most likely would've fallen asleep. So if the game's not very social, it's on you to fix it if you consider it a problem.

@Wournsfeik I sometimes talk to people on my parties selected by DF. I sometimes for really quiet/dead players that don't want to tall cuz want to finish with the dungeon ASAP and in another times I find very social people. It would have been cool to party with you. Hakkue manor is one of my favorite dungeons

@dekal: Yeah, I get that a lot too. Some people treat their daily roulette as a job to grind out Poetics instead of taking the time to enjoy the game. I stay out of Roulette a lot these days just because of it.

But when I do go in, I try to do at least a little talking to 'test the waters' so to speak.

I understand not everyone is outgoing but sometimes to "Get Social" interactions you gave to "Be Social" yourself". Saying "Hi" is generic, vague and only warrants a "Hi" or "Hello" response. It's not the green light for anyone to start talking to you.

For my FC I speak even when no one is talking. I either go until I get a response or I actually ask someone about their day or themselves which actually opens dialogue. Me saying "Hi FC" again doesn't warrant someone adventuring to stop and hold a meaningful conversation.

Also if you are an officer or leader try to get your members to work together by bridging the dialogue between them. If someone needs a run go "Hey XXX! XYZ needs a run let's go help him!" it helps reduce the "Cliques" and get people generally familiar and comfortable with each other.

It's rather amusing to me how many people want to force social interaction on people.

But it would be nice if this game let you do more things together if you so choose. Not being able to do quests together, especially story quests is kind of annoying.

I'm not sure if this works since I don't use the PS4 version, but if FFXIV uses the standard PS4 keyboard you can input text with your smartphone keyboard using the Playstation App (assuming you have a smartphone).

I stopped talking dungeons since you can be kicked for it. Even in between fights. I feel awkward during silent runs but w/e. I just say hello and bye now.

I only found this out because I had a friend with me once and he said the option came up.

Exactly. TBH you don't even really need to chat to be "social" in an MMO. Sometimes I walk past areas and I see some new 50s or just people struggling, like dying soon to an alex map mob or whatever I'd just throw them some heals or lend a helping hand before going off and you can see them feeling happy for your help.

If you're the kind who just stood there and watch them die and laugh at them and feeling happy about it then don't complain this game ain't social lel.

Games can still be designed to encourage socializing. This game is designed to do the opposite.

Group content, which is primarily done through DF for most people, is designed to have short and sweet groups that you'll never communicate with again and are unable to communicate with again.

Content outside DF is mostly soloable.

I'd have far more friends if cross server communication was possible, and it should be possible really considering this is supposed to be a modern MMO. Not allowing cross server communication seems like something that should be found in an ancient game.
