Question about healing Thousand Maws, because I sucked at it

So I have 2 level 50s, Bard as primary and BLM that I got to 50 but hated it and haven't touched it yet. I find healing fun so was playing Conjurer mainly because I like the no queues. Up until Thousand Maws I was doing really well, was actually doing tons of DPS (even though I know that will probably fade away as dungeons get harder). I found it pretty straightforward up until then, tank would seldom need heals, could let them get down to even like 75-80% and then Cure would bring them to 100%, and if multiple people were taking damage then Medica would take care of that.

When I did thousand maws the other night though I had to actually leave the duty at the second boss because I just couldn't keep the party alive. They were all people that had level 50 characters when I'd examine them, but the roles they were playing were just base classes like THM and LNC.

The problem I had though was the tank would take damage constantly compared to before, so was non stop curing him. At the second boss though it kept hitting everyone with poison and then slow. So suddenly the tank would be at like 70% health, I'd try to do Cure, which would take forever due to Slow, so as I'd be casting cure, the other 2 DPS would suddenly be down to like 80% health. I'd then try to do esuna on like the tank, and while doing that he'd get hit down to like 50% with the other 2 DPS close behind. I'd manage to get a Cure in and it would take him from like 50% to maybe 70% so seemed less effective, then he'd wipe and the rest would follow right after.

So I don't know if it was just a crap party or not but after 3 times they told me to leave or get voted out, but I honestly have no idea how else to do it. They would literally wipe less than a minute into the battle, their health would just plummet and tons of things like slow, poison etc. It's scared me away from healing since it's such a low level dungeon. I dunno if it was more my fault or just them, as their gear seemed low but makes me not want to attempt it again and screw up another party.

You need to esuna yourself, then the tank, then the dps. Then heal.
It sounds like you never used esuna.

This is something of a judgment call depending on the status affliction and the others' health. However, getting slow off yourself should definitely be top priority.

Try to stand back far enough that the status effects aren't landing on you. Also, is your gear reasonably up to date? Make sure you've got something in every slot... even a few more points MND can actually make a pretty big difference at that level.

If you're still having trouble, ask a friend in your FC/LS that normally heals to come along as a tank or DPS. They can help troubleshoot and give tips.

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone that's a good idea. It was so weird how it kept going down, like I was trying to esuna all the time but in the time it would take to cast it they were dying so quickly. I find it kind of hard also to tell what status afflictions someone has as I'm on PS4 so it just shows the icons beside someones name, but you can't just mouse over them easily to see what each is, so hard to tell if one is a buff or a status effect.

I think my gear is good but I'll definitely check, someone made it all for me when I was at a lower level and I'm pretty sure when I checked it was one of those things where even higher level gear still gave lesser stats, but I'll double check and see and try to get better gear if not. Was just so weird because every instance up until then was straightforward and almost boring, then suddenly it was like overkill time.

It's the adds that inflict Slow. I usually tell the tank (if he doesn't know already) not to bother with picking up the adds and just use Repose - Swiftcast - Repose to put both of them to sleep and just burn boss. If you didn't have time to put them to sleep, just stay away from them, heal, and Esuna whenever possible.

Debuffs always take priority on the party menu, so in this case you would want to watch the first two icons. Both debuffs have a red background, Slow has an image of a clock, and Poison is like drops or bubbles or something.

Edit: Oh, and don't bother removing poison from the tank. The moment you do that, the boss will AoE poison again. If you have melee DPS, remove poison only from them. Otherwise, you waste your effort.

You will quickly memorize what each status affliction symbol means.

Great thanks so much that helps. I don't have Repose yet as I'm only at 25 right now, just about at 26 so that would help I'm sure. I was just worried that maybe it's too difficult to play a WHM as a secondary character as it seems like it needs far more practice and what not. I do enjoy playing it but I enjoy Bard a bit more, just was getting sick of the long queues for it so find healer fun to play when I just want to quickly do a dungeon. Scared to think of what it must be like healing Titan HM as that's hard enough as Bard when I can move around non stop and not worry about keeping people alive and hating me haha.

Put swiftcast on your hotbar and use it to esuna yourself. Also stand back farther to avoid being poisoned yourself. That fight can be troublesome if you try to dps, so just focus on curing. But, if you are had a party full of classes, not jobs, that would be part of the problem.

Thanks, yeah there wasn't one class there was just a mess. Even tried Swiftcast but as soon as I could get it down I'd get hit with more stuff since it was chaos. Just scared me to try it again lol but tonight I will, maybe dig up some people from my FC to come along, since I'm sure everyone can't wait to do thousand maws lol.

Remove slow first. It's like on an airplane where they tell you to secure your own oxygen mask first. Esuna only has a 1-second cast time so it is not all that much slower to remove it first (and wait for GCD to reset) then cast cure vs doing cure while slowed. By the second casting of cure, you are better off having done Esuna. It is a similar situation for paralysis when you run into that down the road.
