    I think its more about how difficult doing it would be vs the investment. despite it having a decent shelf life the PS4 is still a limited set of hardware, therefore they have to decide if the time needed to impliment such features that will most likely give the system a performance hit would be worth it.

    it isn't exactly DirectX11.1, their tools have feature sets from DX11.1 but it is not exactly DirectX. but their tools are also built from features from OpenGL(I forget what version) and some of their own feature sets. sony's tools for the PS4 are rather impressive, you should look em up.

    The main advantage the PS4 has over the PS3 is not graphics, it is sustained higher frame rates so that they can do content with less likely hood of being excluded from groups due to performance lag/stutter.
    DirectX 11 is actually a lot more streamlined than DX9. If it was brought to the PS4 the game would actually run better, not worse.

    Theres a problem with this you are not looking into, a more stream lined process gives a few things, either make it more efficient at the same visuals so more FPS or crank up the settings a bit more at the same FPS or lower FPS, now this depends on the settings to use, tesselation would consume all the GPU grunt the PS4 has, and the shadows also have an impact on CPU in which the APU in the PS4 is rather weak on at the moment.

    It is far better to squeeze more FPS so that FPS stays closer to 60 FPS more of the time then up the graphics for more dips, this is a team based game, more performance is important, people will get annoyed just like they are currently at the PS3 players for the extra 'lag' they comes from it.

    this I totally agree with.
    slightly off topic but appropriate I think. I was telling a friend the other day I honestly think SE should have dumbed down the graphics on the PS3 a bit to gain FPS and save a little on memory. maybe it's just me but I think it could have worked better that way.

    Direct X is software that provides a framework for developers to access certain hardware featues more easily. The fact thst Direct X 11 is more efficient is Due to the libraries opening up more GPU features to developers. The same hardware features can be driven be any other equivalent API library, such as OpenGL. DirctbX is an MS specific graphics library designed to allow Windows developers to talk to the hardware better. It is not hardware, and in no way is it intrinsicly better than any other software. It doesn't mater whether or not PS4 directly supporstbDirect X calls or not, the underlying hardware features are present and may be accessed just as easily using Open GL.

    The only impact of Direct X on PS4 is that the PS4 may perform better just as modern PCs should, since the use of the GPU under Direct X uses more advanced features allowing the PS4 version to similarly make better use of the GPU resources it has.
