this system seems like a really horrible idea :x
Mew!
So far a lot of people are just complaining without offering alternatives....
Alternative, that everyone already wants:
Claim multiple monsters/monster groups at once. Raising the limit to the number of monsters a single person/group could lay claim too at any given time Is what people really wanted. And for guildleves and dungeons, and any other instance, there should be no claim limit.
^This a hundred timesi say yes, i prefer "Contents that drop rare items will be more instance based in future, and will also lessen where you have to fight over to claim."
really i love do instance raid that claim hnm, is more fun and challenge complete dungeon with limit time that wait for hours for hnms that ls with many bots always win the claim![]()
The idea isn't horrible, but the implementation seems to be off. As I've probably said a million times in my time at the lodestone, I'm going to use the ideology of ArenaNet's dev-team (Yes, I'm a big fan of the upcoming Guild Wars 2, sue me.)
They think that people should always be happy to see other players. And this is true.
If you're 2 HP from dying and another player comes along and is able to save you without having to heal you, but it doesn't destroy your Reward for the damage you did do to the mob. Say you spend fighting 10 minutes alone fighting an NM, and then suddenly you're about to lose but another player comes along and helps you kill it because he needs something too. He comes over, helps you do the deed, and you are both rewarded based off how much you contributed to the fight.
It's a Massive MULTIPLAYER Online game. We should be happy to see other players.
I don't agree that most of the game should be instanced as far as endgame, because I did enjoy my sea/sky raids, but I don't see why rewarding players for helping each other is a bad thing when everyone is awarded based off of contribution to the fight. We should be worried about killing the mob, not worried about claiming it from someone else.
It would give reason for linkshells to come together against a large foe instead of potentially griefing each other.
What they should do is make it so that it whatever item drops is put into an "Open Pool" that is available to anyone who contributed, and people that are eligible to use the item are able to roll on it.

Insulting people in the counter argument isn't going to change their minds. It will make them stick harder to their opinion regardless of whether or not it's right, and think less of your opinion simply because you insulted them. In essence, if you want to try and change someone's mind, come up with a well thought-out response and don't be a dick.
They make it instanced because most of the time you won't want to/don't have the mean to share the drop with another person. How do you share a much coveted helmet drop with 10 other person? Each person take a piece of the helmet? Not to mention I will happily relieve your hard work by coming at the last minute and hit the NM once to ninja your drop. The idea isn't horrible, but the implementation seems to be off. That's why they will still have open world NM but more coveted stuff will be instanced.
I'd like to hear about it more directly from the dev team before I make my assumptions. Although I prefer more open world content and this sounds like it encourages the oposite.
Well, of course it would have to be thought out better than I have, but I'm also not a game developer (yet. Huzzah school!)They make it instanced because most of the time you won't want to/don't have the mean to share the drop with another person. From what I've seen in ArenaNet's video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUVLclPDCBE (Skip ahead to 4:36~ish)
You can see that once the Shatterer is killed a big chest drops, and everyone goes to it and receives a reward useful to their class based on how much effort they put into it. Can you imagine how awesome big fights like this would be in FFXIV? Would be much more fun instead of ALWAYS fighting over a boss claim.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, I think the idea of open world content is fun. However, standing around for hours, waiting for a HNM which only spawns once a day and only has a small chance to drop what you want, only to be outclaimed by a bot is personally not so fun. You seem to want it the "FFXI Hardcore" way, but if you actually participated in it in FFXI, you would already know how horribly it turned out.
Though, I am with everyone in the hopes that the way SE implements it does not cause people to be jerks.
