Maybe on a low population server you could get away with this...

    .. for a few days.

Overall long term you're doing it wrong if you're investing so much in a single item/category. Sharks that don't swim die.

The rage was real, ultimately more on my part than his. One person had the right idea about being severely undercut...buy the item and resell. The whole idea of this is that if you must reach out to someone for undercutting, don't be an ass about it. Introducing yourself to someone by insulting them isn't a good strategy, either. Generally, i'm more of a carebear sort, but this pissed me off to no end.
And tell me, what about ppl who grossly inflate a market? Even at the undercut price, i am making over three times what i spent for the materials, barring time (i generally gather my own mats). Is it okay to be overly greedy? Why not pass along some savings to the fighters of Eorzea?

If I was on a more populated server, I would just muddy the waters up a bit, then move on to a different market, then come back after a few days while the other people duke it out over little bits of profit.. It's not just about the numbers, it's more about pissing off the other party so that next time they see your retainer's name, they'll just avoid competing with you completely.

In either case, you're just doing it to leave an impression and that's certainly worth the bit of money lost imo.

True. Its not a long time strategy. It takes alot of work to keep the market down and running at break even or loss. Best strategy afterwards would be like gillionaire had said, muddy it up and come back later to sort it out. Then you could repeat if too much competition remains. Soon people would dread seeing your retainer and not bother to battle you. Than you can slowly raise the price, dominate the market, and enjoy till the next mb battle.

If I had been undercut like that I'd be pretty pissed, but I wouldn't personally message the crafter.

Cost of materials is what, under 100k? The 20 item sell history probably goes back to last year. There is an incredibly tiny market for ilvl90 gear at 680k per piece, at 450k you might be able to sell it in a week if you're the only seller at that price.

I am so tired of being undercut, I literally start giving away items at MB.

I'm at a loss as to understand why anyone would be even a little bit upset at someone doing this with THEIR item.
It's not yours so you have zero right to be upset about it. If he wants to sell the item for 200k less than the other guy that's his choice. If you think this is going to hurt your bottom line you simply buy the item and resell it for your desired sell price.
Stating that his action would cause you (potential reader) to be angry only shows that you suffer from emotional immaturity and only affects you and not anyone else. Save yourself some wasted grief and move on guys! Crafters can be so pouty lol.

The biggest factor is you're going to dump the item way faster. Plus what I have perceived from the MB.

Player A lists item for 700k
Player B lists item for 699k

    0-24 hours later
Player A relists item for 698k

    0-24 hours later
Player B relists item for 697k

This will go on until either Player A or B's item gets sold and that's not if Player C-Z enter the market. I am the jerk, I will list at market price on an item and if Player C enters I will undercut by 10% and continuously do so to muddy the waters. Also my purpose for significantly undercutting is to dump my item. If the item is 700k value and I sell at 400k then anyone with more patience can turn around the item for a profit. I get the money I need while market watchers will see the low value and resell for the actual value.

Yah you just pointed out something that's already common knowledge lol. My point is why people would be so reviled over another persons actions. Unless person A and person B are watching the market every 5 minutes then there is no real reason for them to see a significant price slasher in their midst. The item would move before either of these penny pinchers noticed or one of them would have snatched it and put it back in with their price. I'm scratching my head at the "grief" incurred by having to either a) wait a little longer for that money (there are no guarantees in a MB sale *important*)
Or b) seeing someone not want to play the pithy "I'll drop a Gil, you drop a Gil" game. What a pointless waste of time when you can just snatch up the winnings by undercutting by larger margins. Those who sell-sell well
