Unless it's some magical meteor that brings new life rather than death.
The meteor that's heading for vanadiel during the Crystal War era (WoTG expansion pack is Atomos, which is the Temporal Avatar that devours realities. Therefore it actually isn't out of the realm of possibilities that this meteor could be more glimpses into the past (Echo) that's merging with the present so if it destroyed gridania for example, it could have been in the past and the sylphs and elementals created an illusion of the gridania we currently see.

It's pretty easy to explain in a FF world because as someone said...anything goes.

I wouldn't expect it to actually collide, more that it might be a plot device for change similar to the Garleans themselves, and Urianger (sp?). It could get close enough before being stopped to cause gravitational changes etc. as a result, but if it collided all I'd be able to see for the 'landmarks' in each zone would be... craters.

It's going to be really interesting to see what happens, it kind of reminds me of FFIX with it's red and blue moons (although I doubt there's another planet inside Hydaelyn, nomming on it's souls.... ala FFIX..).

Well, the moon could affect movement of the tides and other natural happenings in any case.

In the first wave of side-quests way back when there was one where an NPC mentioned that he noticed the smaller moon getting larger. Old news but yeah it bears mentioning since I guess not many people do/read the side-quest stuff

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Red star, fall! Stain the earth RED! (incoming Lavos in 5...4...3...)

I remember doing the quest in La Noscea that mentioned the smaller moon getting larger. It's neat how SE throws in these little perks from time to time with the now red appearance to it.

Also I had to look over some screenshots I took in the past, and I never noticed this but it looks like SE also had the smaller moon go through it's own orbit (seen it on the left side, the right side, and not even visible with the larger moon).

Now whether or not the moon has anything to do with Meteor at all will have to wait to be seen.
