I had already upgraded, but I had always thought that when the FREE upgrade ends, you will now have to pay a small fee like $10 or so for the upgrade. I didn't know it was going to kill upgrades all together! Hmm that kind of sucks.

It doesnt kill upgrades, it ends peoples ability to do the upgrade. if you have already upgraded, you keep your ps4 version. nothing will happen to you. it simply stops x person being able to upgrade after the 31st of this month, and forces them to buy the game.
I've got a couple of semi-related questions. I currently have a PS3 and purchased the FFXIV Collector's Edition through the PSN, and am in the process of purchasing a PS4. I understand that the upgrade campaign currently offered through the end of this month will basically allow me to transfer my license from PS3 to PS4, meaning I would no longer be able to play the PS3 version going forward. I also know that on the information site for the upgrade campaign, they say that if I wanted to play the game on both platforms, I would need to purchase the PS4 version separately. My question is would I be able to participate in the upgrade campaign in order to play on the PS4, and at a later date re-purchase the PS3 version? Reasoning aside, would this work? I could imagine difficulty re-purchasing it from the playstation network, because it's already listed as having been purchased.
Yes, you would be able to do that. There may be some difficulty re-purchasing it from PSN as you mentioned as it already shows that you own the game, but using a code from the physical copy on PS3 would be the easiest solution if you wish to go that route. My question is would I be able to participate in the upgrade campaign in order to play on the PS4, and at a later date re-purchase the PS3 version? Have you personally confirmed this works, and that there would be no issues with the game being "already purchased" in the playstation network? Or would I need to purchase the license through either the mogstation, or with a physical copy?

I actually had to do that for my own game.
I did the upgrade, which converts your game license into a PS4. I was playing on my laptop mostly so I thought to do it.
Laptop peetered out before I saved for PS4, still wanted to play, so I just used the money to buy the CE of ARR for PS3. Since I faced the issue Bayone described. I just bit the bullet and got the digital CE.
Finally got PS4 last week. Used the free code, and viola.
Now my Mogstation account is registered to play ARR on PC, PS3, and PS4.

There's already some issues on my end. I purchased all the PS3 copies back in the day; and used the code. Because I participated in the beta for 2.0 it says I can't use my upgrade code. When I then try to purchase the item "new service account" or anything in future related to XIV (PS4) it says I first need to own FFXIV on PS4 >.>
Wonderful news. My PS4 arrives on Monday, so I think I'll do the upgrade (just as soon as I confirm that the PS4 isn't DOA) and purchase a physical copy of the PS3 version either when I need it, or when the price is right. I just wanted to make sure it was feasible to go back to the PS3 in case something either happened to my PS4, or it became convenient somehow to use the PS3 at another location.
