I imagine something like PSO2es. Not the exact same game, but with a similar feeling too it, and with rewards that are shared between games.
Anyway, FFXI has been around for nearly 15 years now. It's had a good, long run. It going into maintenance mode is hardly the worst thing that could happen too it at this point, especially when most of the servers are practically empty even during primetime.
As someone who played FFXI since release, I've never understood this. FFXI was not a difficult game outside of logistics, and that generally fell on only the upper level linkshell leaders across the server to either play nice or constantly be causing drama. The game itself was quite easy (with two exceptions, AV and PW).

Progression in XI was almost entirely party-based, and that's what made it more challenging. Leveling required finding a party, getting a good camp spot, defeating enemies at a speed that made the party worthwhile, and managing abilities so that they're used at the best possible times (for damage, hate management, survival etc.). Now sure, if you have a consistent group of people you can do this with, it's easy. Most players didn't have that luxury, and just getting an invite could take hours. As someone who played FFXI since release, I've never understood this.
