There are all of these conversations and studies asking why people play characters of opposite gender online, and how to out them, but I'd really love to see a study asking why some of the people asking these questions seem to be so bothered by it, or are straight up bigots about it. I have my theories but it would be interesting to see some official research done on it.

*Leaves while there's only about 8 to 9 pages in this thread after having left posts*

*Comes back to see 32 pages*

... I... what? *Sigh* So this thread really did go down the direction I feared it would. Welp, I'm left with no choice then. Like what I'm doing with the "Blame Square for why we all play as Miqo'tes!" thread, I shall do here as well now:

Game specific research would be interesting to read, but it might also bit a bit redundant. You need only read up on "cognitive dissonance" (preferably in a psych text rather than a wikipedia but whatever works.)

I was listening to a convo between FC members where one said that he's actually a straight guy but his character is a girl. Not sure how it devolved into somehow being a cross dresser in some way because he plays a girl; others were questioning his sexuallity.

    The whole thing was weird.

Well that makes sense. I'm a guy and I jump around everywhere like the floor is lava. I assume it's because men tend to have a shorter attention span than women?

Also, I play female toons in most games that give me the choice due to the extra effort developers and artists put into female characters. Whether they are skimpy or fully clad in platemail. in world of warcraft, I play a male dwarf and it is the only exception...because dwarf master race.

P.S. just quit WoW and joined FF14 on the 9th of march and have to say the game and community is very refreshing coming from wows side of things. Hoping end game players are just as kind and polite as the leveling community is.

Why do you need to identify a female character as a guy or girl? Are you looking for a potential mate? There are easier methods.

Fair enough. Do google searches for the Daedalus Project or any of his studies. Here's a blog post that gives an overview of most of the studies referenced in this thread: http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_te...e_avatars.html

Yup. I checked on this thread early (when there were only 5 or so pages) and knew it was going to go downhill. These kinds of threads are never productive and are nothing more than posts containing "Hey, my character is this gender, but I'm the opposite". And it sure didn't take long for there to be "lol there's no gurls on internets duh, who'd be dumb enough to put a computer in the kitchen derp derp derp". Though it is amusing to see some get squeamish about the idea of interacting with a guy playing a female character.

Fact: People play what they find fun, even if that character has some stark differences from the player (aside from race).

I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.

Do people like you even try? Seriously, it took me 30 seconds and a single google search to find things that prove you wrong. All reports/studies/stats/articles showing a higher percentage than 25%. Anywhere from 35% tp 45%.

Also, you can't really speak for other girls. Considering you are a guy. I personally have no issue with women saying their gender. I don't think it's for attention, it does come up during normal conversations. It's a pretty ridiculous statement to say many other women think that.

Thanks. Interesting read. I will say that when I played WoW I experienced female gender-switching less often. Maybe the male avatars in WoW are less attractive to female gamers than they are here. This could account for mine, and others, personal experiences of closer to a 50-50 split rather than 7%. I also see more male gender-switching in this game as well. This may be due to the same reasons. People want to play something that is aesthetically pleasing to them. I think this can even transcend genders. If male avatars are more attractive to females in FFXIV than in WoW, they could by the same token be less attractive to males. I don't think there's anything weird about playing a female avatar. You're just playing what you find most aesthetically pleasing.
