It might hurt. Some people like the anonymity and pressure to tell more may make them uncomfortable. The character gives them more license to be themselves or be something they aren't IRL.

OMG yes.
most of us in the FC know what gender we all are due to voice chat, but no one has ever said or been asked directly what gender they were.
honestly when just chatting to people in FC chat (text only), little bits of personal information often filter though. what kind of food you like, if you have any pets, stuff like that.
it's better to see if you can just make a friend, often being labelled a gender (doesn;t matter which) can put various pressures/agendas on one and other whether warranted or not. and gawd who wants that when a video game is for escapism.

I actually do agree with that. I wouldn't reveal more about myself, until I know and trust the person I'm speaking to. Your character gives you escapism. People might play the game to forget about rl.
