There are many popular methods and what not people use to try and identify if the player is a guy or a girl. But the truth of the matter is there's no way to know for certain unless the person in question straight up tells you their gender... and even then, they could be trolling you.

I know a few female players who are actually into being skimpy with their female characters, so the idea of female players only play as female characters that are fully dressed or male characters to avoid being hit on is already debunked. I usually play as guy characters myself, but I'm not against the idea of playing as a female character every now and then, skimpy or not. I usually look to what type of character the said character is over how they look, and that's how I gravitate to them. This is of course null in a game like FFXIV where you simply MAKE your own character, but still, my point stands.

If the bonding system is a concern, the biggest thing you should keep in mind is that this is a videogame. It's not like you're committing to each other in real life. Me and a FC member of mine thought the same thing, so we went through with the bonding system. We're both guy players, but our characters happen to be male and female, so we said... "Why not?" Besides, I've used various in-game marriage systems, to the point of which I hardly even think about it anymore, let alone phase me in any way.

Long story short, does it matter? As long as you enjoy the company of that person, it shouldn't matter me thinks.

EDIT: I usually assume the other player is a guy until I'm told otherwise if I don't know the player's gender. Again, doesn't really matter to me though.

EDIT 2: Gay and Lesbian relationships exist in this world too you know. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not see this thread not go down that route like SO MANY OTHER THREADS DO.

Fact: If you're a guy and you hook up / Eternal Bond with someone with a female avatar, but then you find out that they're a male player, it makes you gay. As in, it literally changes your orientation to make you prefer guys.

After that, you develop a lisp and suddenly have to redecorate your apartment.

I'm a female playing a female character. I've been told that my use of proper grammar/spelling gives the impression that I'm a guy (seriously???), but my excessive use of emotes gives the impression that I'm a girl.

As far as the... "men tend to jump around and women stand still" anecdote... I tend to run laps around my FC house while I'm bored, talking on voicechat, or waiting on a queue.

Truth be told, it's hard to tell. I've heard many people say stuff like, "Oh I can tell that girl was really a guy..." or, "I have a feeling that person is a girl..." The best thing to do is just to ask. I tend not to bring up being female, unless it's relevant... although once people hear my voice, the answer is pretty obvious.

I have enjoyed reading this thread so far. There are a lot of stereotypes about how women or men act. I personally feel that you can never really tell if you're talking to a man or a woman but I've internalized a lot of stereotypes also so occasionally will find myself randomly thinking "Now that person is definitely a guy! (or a girl)" In my defense I'll say that I immediately realize that I know no such thing; stereotypes are, well, stereotypes. I can't think of a characteristic that ALL men or ALL women have.

As far as assuming people are male until proven otherwise, I think that's sexist and unfair. I know someone is going to try to trot out some statistic here in an attempt to prove that more men play. That might even be true but I still think it's unfair to assume everyone is male. Even if say 90% of the people who play are male, you have to assume the 10% of women are male also. In that case, will you be right more often than not? Sure, but I feel like you just can't ignore the X% of the time that you'll be wrong.

Lastly, the thing about voice chat... it kind of bothers me. Like when I join voice chat I want it to be 100% about chatting with friends or coordinating a raid and not about other players trying to figure out my gender. I've had some awkward moments in the past when people realize I'm a woman (I guess I act more masculine, maybe I jump around too much? lol j/k). Anyway, I can pass as a guy if I want in voice chat (especially since some people are probably assuming it) so I think I'm going to argue that even voice chat is far from a certain method of determining someone's gender.

All this being said, I don't know why someone's real life gender is important to anyone. As far as pronouns and stuff like that, I just use them based on the gender of the character someone is playing. If they're a guy playing a female character and don't like being called "she" or "her" they'll just correct me and we'll move on with our lives

Just ask. There's absolutely no reason for someone to hide their gender on a game unless that people in question is a guy wanting to get free things saying he's a girl, because countless jerks do that as if girls needed a virtual sugardaddy.

Other than that, no reason at all.

As well as if you have no intention to ever meet that person in real life, there's no reason to ask if the player is a guy or a girl in the first place. If you want to get that person out of the game to your personal life, sure, go ahead. Otherwise it's just curiosity about something that won't change your life at all.

Hmm..very interesting. Thanks for that insight. It helps with my research a lil bit. To me, I have no problem with it watsoever, but lets say if I were to hang out with a female character all day chatting and doing raids, dungeons, etc. (and this is my opinion) I would rather hang out with with a female "female" character just bcuz it feels right and it feels like the natural order kinda like reality but in a game.
