In 1562 he was 17, he's 32 now (and clearly has a Peter Pan complex).

That was (probably) entirely a lie. The VIIth Legion was doing a good job shaking things up in Eorzea, so Thancred, Yda, Papalymo, and Y'shtola needed a distraction while they went about convincing the city-states to re-establish the Grand Companies and unite. That distraction was Urianger - a socially awkward guy who cryptically speaks using archaic words and grammar because he's spent more time with books than people. He teleported around shouting doomsday verses from the Divine Chronicles while people spread rumours that he was an Archon or that he was part of a group of immortal mages selling Eorzean souls to the demon lords of the seven hells for sole dominion over the relam. I'm about 95% sure that it was all just made up so he could rile up Van Darnus (and it totally worked; the legatus himself showed up interviewing players trying to hunt him down).

That's all based on the original Hatching-tide lore, which claimed the Archons were earthly manifestations of the Twelve who'd ride giant eggs to Eorzea and save us all from the Calamity. Since then, we've seen normal flesh and blood Sharlayans called the Archons and it seems to just be a title.

    If I had to guess
, I'd say that educated history-keepers are often at the forefront of saving people from an Umbral Era, and that the ones from other eras end up remembered as divine beings - angels - messengers of the gods' will - because myth gets bigger and bigger as time goes on. So a new umbral era comes, the history-keepers show back up, and everyone's like "THE ANGELS HAVE RETURNED!" while the old Archon's great great great great great great great great grandkids are just like, "Sure, we'll go with that for now, please just start planning a defense."
