Adding all the colors for all clothing is fine and all but then you'd have a ridiculous amount of recipes. The more simple way of doing it is to just dye finished items. You could still tell what kind of base materials they're made from, but now you have more options for colors.

I just want to be able to customize the color of my gear without stupid dye tier restrictions and of course being able to change dropped items.

To counterpoint, adding the ability to re-dye existing items is fine and all, but then you'd have a ridiculous amount of items. Either way, large numbers of SOMETHING have to be added.

An increase in the number of coloring recipes need not result in an increase of the number of actual recipes. In fact, it could result in a decrease. For velveteen robes, currently there are five distinct recipes - one for each color option. This could be simplified down to ONE recipe. However, the color materials used would pass their color information into the color fields of the resultant item. Changing and consolidating the design of the recipe system.

I believe the part of the flaw in the current system is that each colored item is a unique item in its own right (hence the unique name). For some reason SE was did not / could not add the custom fields for each item that would carry subcomponent color information. For either system of recoloring / more recipe options to work, this design would have to be changed.

I suspect that SE is having to develop something along these line for the new materia system anyhow. Each piece of gear will now have to carry along information about what materia has been slotted into it. This info cannot be a part of the base item information. Once materia is in, I can hope that the same system will allow for diverse color information to be stored as well.

All that said, I still don't expect to convince anyone, nor believe that my opinion will be in the majority. I simply wished to post my minority opinion (along with my reasoning). I can still hope that a re-dying system allows for "basic" changes of color (e.g. the two-color choices I've seen in most MMOs), while more intricate and detailed color creation options are left to the crafting process.

I'd be fine with that idea actually. Allow people to dye their items by changing the recipe would be fine too but it doesn't address the dropped item problem.

At the very least if they want to keep all the current recipes, take out the dye tier restrictions. Let us use any color straps, cloth, pieces, etc...

This is pretty much what I was thinking of too.

    I dunno man...

In one hand I like the fact that you can dye gear whenever you want with some color.
In the other hand I find it logical that you need dyed cloth to do a determined color.

Sorry, but I prefer the second hand =) The first hand looks like... loldyekthxbye. The second one sounds more logical and fun/frustrating to do.

"We have to dye the fabric before doing this or that."

    makes sense.

"Hey I'm in the upper class, I can wear this blue shirt. You're in the lower class, you can only wear that brown shirt. I know they look alike but the colors are different!"

    doesn't make sense.

There is too much inconsistency and restriction. This should be a fantasy world for the good of it. Instead, I feel like I'm living in the age of slavery.

I don't care about the process or item slots or number of recipes.

    I don't care how!

I just want to be able to have an item become a color I choose it to be so I can match outfits and look different than everybody else!

I hate the color of the Solid Scale Mail and of the Royalist thing. I don't even want to get them because I wouldn't wear them... I would look ugly as f'ck in it.

The idea of bleaching + dye is nice, hehe. Maybe there could be something like Canvas Dye (Red) so that some colours are limited to the fabric.
