No a prism is a means to attach a visual to another item. You still need the original item. Once you glamour you don't need the original item anymore (unless you want to re-glamour it later).
So how it works. Item A is old item with cool graphic. Item B is new item with MEH graphic. You buy/craft a prism of the appropriate type and grade, then you apply the old graphic to the new item. It consumes the glamour prism. At that point you can ditch the old item. Be warned, the graphic goes to the new item, so if you replace that item with another one and want the same visual is the original, you would need to glamour the original again.
