So question. I am 3 books away from finishing up all the books for the weapon. Is it worth doing all the work with the expansion right around the corner? Thoughts??

Honestly nobody can really answer this question at the moment.
Things we know:
- the zodiac quest line will continue in 3.1 so your weapons will never be useless
- they will most likely be the only weapons in the game with customizable stats
Things we don't know:
- they could make all current steps significantly easier in the expansion to account for level cap increase
- they could release grade 5 materia and make grade 4 significantly easier to obtain thereby reducing the current 350-450k value of certain grade 4s
- they could add additional weapons outside of 8 man raids that match or are better than the upgraded zodiac
- they could simply level sync players for current endgame dungeons and continue to make them go through all of the steps
- the weapons may not be useful at all until the 3.1 patch when they are upgraded again
Yoshi-P himself confirmed that the zodiac questline will continue in 3.1 during an interview.

i heard rumers from my friends saying the zeta quest is the final upgrade. i am not sure about this but, this will be major disapointment for me. i got 1 nexsus and 1 novus atm, and if it this is true, i dont know why would i bother finish them to zeta and why is everyone doing relic quest if this is true. i hope its not true.... plz let us know what is going to happen to relics in 3.0.....
From what I've heard, Zodiac Zeta is the final upgrade for the weapon. There will no doubt be a brand new relic weapon quest that will start in the expansion, and theories are that if you have obtained the Zeta, you will have a significant advantage starting off in the new relic quest. Just not sure what that means.
Thanks for all the replies. I just keep going back and fourth not knowing what to do! I will be changing mains come the expansion. So not sure I am just wasting my time since I will be swapping. Thanks for the info though!
Apparently Yoshi said otherwise in an interview.
If this is the case, what I think they might be doing is make it so the Zodiac IS the Heavensward relic. Anybody who does it now just gets a jump on the process so you'll be 2 steps in when patch 3.1 drops. Either that or they'll make the early steps stupid easy in patch 3.0. IE: 100% drop rate on atmas, zodiac items, etc. Greatly reduced or removed tomestone costs. Remove the FATE kill requirements for books. That sort of thing.
He was a little bit vague but this is the exact quote from various interviews:
Will we be able to continue to enhance the Zodiac weapons after the release of Heavensward?
Y: When Heavensward is first released and the level cap is raised, there will also be a large jump in item level. Character development will be the theme for the initial release of the expansion, 3.0. The growth of weapons and equipment will resume in 3.1, so if we do add new content to continue weapon growth, it will be in patch 3.1.
Will Zodiac weapons continue to undergo development in the future? Like in Heavensward?
Y: Since players who have been going through the whole Zodiac weapon saga so far have put a lot of work into it, it won't be like we suddenly forget all about them. For Heavensward, since the character level cap will be raised at the start, the adventurer himself will grow, so players will be aiming to acquire new items through the new content. Whether it's the Zodiac Weapon Saga or its sequel, players will be able to continue growing a weapon in patch 3.1.
So Zodiac Weapon owners will get some attention at that time.
Y: Yes, of course.
I am pretty sure they will start a new type of relic weapon in 3.0 that doesn't require you to have done the previous weapon. Given the fact it says its the final upgrade in the quest when you finish it.
Maybe we should wait til after Saturday. If Yoshi-P doesn't mention it during the PAX East panel then feel free to continue the wild speculations on something that will be answered in less then 3 months.
