Optional yes but put in for all to have "fun" with, but there is a point when the "fun" wears off and it turns into grind and people get tired of the content that may have brought them to the game.
Why does everyone have to go total ass-hat when someone complains about the grinding in this game? I'm a scrub at FF compared to everyone else but I could assure you that it wouldn't be the case if the grinding in FF wasn't so damn boring. OP, I agree with you.
Every thing is fun, but when you try to complete everything in earnest, and get all the best things (i.e. triple triad cards/achievements that require you to diligently work towards them) then yes it becomes a grind. If everything was easily attainable, the excitement of getting those things isn't really all that great anymore.
This sums it up pretty well

Not really a matter of making things easily obtainable but to adjust this RNG that seems to be more than super random.Every thing is fun, but when you try to complete everything in earnest, and get all the best things (i.e. triple triad cards/achievements that require you to diligently work towards them) then yes it becomes a grind. If everything was easily attainable, the excitement of getting those things isn't really all that great anymore.

So far pretty predictable responses but I'm not complaining that I have to work for things it's about the length of time one is expected to "work" for things.
Also, the comment about fishing being optional, Coil and Extremes are optional, it's ALL optional. Playing this game is optional!
Also, just because someone likes fishing doesn't mean they like fishing for the SAME fish for 13 hours. Let me achieve my goal, move on to tracking down other big fish, etc.
Your implication is that there are fishing players and Coil players and whatever players but some of us dabble in all the content. I expect it to take longer to achieve specific goals this way but c'mon. You're aware that there are 106 big fish right? 106 x 13 hours = I'm going to find a new game. 80 Triple Triad cards x 7 hours = I'm going to find a new game. At some point you have to say enough is enough.
I have been addicted and I mean ADDICTED to this game since launch and if I'M not putting in enough hours to achieve my goals then no one is. Unless they're just playing Triple Triad the Game right now or, in the case of fishing, hitting Cast/Hook, Cast/Hook, for days on end (and ignoring everything else in the game). There's a serious lack of variety having to play this way to achieve something and in a word it is BORING!
When I work I get paid. Where's the pay (reward) here? And I certainly don't pay someone else to give me the "privilege" of working.
And keep in mind we're not talking about removing any kind of challenge here (nerfing content that is actually difficult) and people are still against it? This blows my mind. Like people would actually want to play the same half dozen iterations of Triple Triad against the same NPC for 12 hours or press Cast/Hook, Cast/Hook, over and over for 13 hours? Methinks the people who are against this sort of thing (better drop rates) already achieved (suffered) this and want others to suffer equally.
Then there are the people that got their drop 1st try and are like "What are you complaining about? Everything is fine. It was easy!" Or the people that are like "Final Coil for Lyfe!" and think they have valid insights to offer into things like Fishing and other content they don't care about at all.
Basically the entire attitude can be summed up to: "It doesn't affect me so therefore I'm fine with it." And I think that's a real shame especially because you're bound to be on the bad side of RNG one day asking yourself "Why do I play this game?"
Maybe developers want players doubting spending (wasting) their time with their games but I highly doubt it.
Edit: "When everyone's special no one will be." LOL I don't want to be that kind of special. "Look I have an achievement one can only get by having nothing better to do on 50 consecutive Saturday nights." How "special," you poor, poor soul you.

sad truth its to pad out the game and your sub.
in my coil static for example we have had 5 axes and 4 bows + 1 staff so far. the rng is ridiculous tbh.
they just dont want you to get your shinies straight away (or at all!!! like in your case) it does not make sense for them to allow it.
also why do you think they split the patch into 3 parts this time? all the content of the 3 patches could have been cleared by players in a week or so. but hey gota split it and keep these people resubing heh cause its not ready suposedly...

somewhere out there someone is getting all their things on the first attempt.
i 100% agree. The game IS getting more and more grindy with every patch.
2.0 seemed really well done. Also the relic quest had a proper path, with primals etc. There was far less grind involved.
After that content got thinner with every patch but the grind got bigger.
I don't mind a grind that is long IF the reward lasts. Since the games progression is as Vertical as can be and things get outdated so fast, the grind is NO WHERE NEAR APPROPRIATE.
Especially not having in mind "the game has to appeal to casuals, we have beginners and new players in mind when designing content etc..."
FFXI was a huge grind, but things lasted for years. Compared to FFXV it is far less of a grind then. And i played/playing both a lot.
