Just like in Yugi-oh. If you keep getting so many trash cards, you can sell them, get gold, and buy a rare card.
Well the only cards you can buy are with MGP so trading them in for MGP is adding to this goal.

Also in regards to your OP in VIII you still had to farm an NPC for them to actually play the card, it doesn't work out much different.
