For me it is all about compromise. If you want to experience without watching it first I will help with that. I expect you to be geared well and very competent with your job. If you are the MT the standards are obviously are even higher, apply extremely to the aforementioned standards. When you group with others and stay with "I pay my sub so I will do it ONLY the way I want" you are being rude. Personally, I care so much about the people I group with, I try to learn enough before I do anything the first time that I can explain to others who know nothing. I try learn everything I can about my job and gear myself as well as I can, not for any glory or pride, I do it so I can be the best i can for the people I play with. I know how valuable my time is and respect yours just as much, it is why I come to play so prepared, I don't want to waste your time, it is my hope, that example will inspire you to care that much about me and my time.

I have recently resubbed the last time i played was Feb 2014, got my ilvl 113 BLM decked out in evenstar and WOD gear, and just unlocked all the Hard Mode dungeons. I queue for them, I do not watch videos. However I tell the group its my first time to the HM, which I have had positive responses, a few boss tips, and successful runs. They also enjoy the extra tomes! However, I can see the issues on Extreme Modes or late Coil Turns as these are a lot more difficult than HM Dungeons.

I did watch videos for the new primal fights (not extreme, have no interest in those yet) and was kinda disappointed, they weren't difficult at all stopped doing it after that

You generally won't be expected to watch videos for any of that content especially the laughable "hard" mode fights that are just story mode with a different name. People normally expect it for extremes and second coil and up because that's where actual challenges are.

This ^ right here is exactly how I approach most fights that "require" some type of guide.

I'm in a FCoB static. We've done everything up to T11 (though, static seems like it's going to break.) Regardless, we all usually watch a video, but I've explained time and time again and even to PF runs I go on. "Yes I've watched a video, but that really doesn't personally help me at all. So I'm sorry if I mess up." Especially if it's a "learning" or "progressive" pt for current content.

Me personally, and some others I know, have to learn by actually doing! I can watch every video there is out for that current piece of content, and read every written guide. Even SMN or WHM specific ones (those are my main and 2ndary jobs), but to me honestly and personally, it's like watching or reading a different language to me. I don't always get or understand completely what someone is trying to fully explain or get at in a guide UNTIL I see it happen with me personally controlling the character in that specific situation. You may call me slow, not bright, or what ever you like.

This is just personally how I learn. Yes I do read/watch guides to know what the name of moves are called, what certain AoE's are called that might need mitigation, or what big hitting ignoring defense moves are so I can prepare myself to say "Oh! It's that move!", but sometimes I don't always have positioning down or movement of the fight until I an actually get inside of the fight.

Now I'm not saying, go into restricted PF pts and just blindly make a fool of yourself. But people need to realize others learning processes aren't always EXACTLY the same as their own. Just like me, yup I'll gladly read/watch which ever guide you want me to, just don't expect me to be anywhere near perfect just because I studied a guide. I need hands on learning.

Sorry that was kind of a long explanation >.<

Well personally, I use letters to make words and words to make sentences and use those sentences to explain stuff.

Most other people do to. Whenever someone rages on the "Hey guys I'm new!" guy, I usually explain stuff, do a ready check, wipe, then call a friend or two to fill the empty spot of the rage quitter.

    Words are awesome.

    Honestly, either is fine.

The point is to make it so that you're at least sort of aware of what can happen during the fight. So that you get an understanding on what success looks like, and where you might be screwing up - so that you can make the most of the practice you do put in.

All these people saying they learn by someone telling them. Imagine if you will you watched a video first and then they told you as well. Now you've received the info twice. EVEN BETTER.

Seriously the videos are like 10-15 minutes long. At some point your stubbornness is effecting other people in a negative way. Justify it all you want, but people ARE negatively effected by your own selfish behavior. I don't really care what everyone's justification are. Get over yourself and meet people half way.

    Did you know?

On JP data centers, PF is for learning and DF is for clears. The expectations of a random group are higher than a preformed one, likely for the same, pragmatic reason as OP.

I'm of the mind that watching videos before hand is only really needed for the more difficult and complex content such as EX's and BCoB, and even then I don't expect myself or people to really know what to do until trying it a number of times after seeing the video.

For the other content like 4 mans, going in knowing nothing about it is perfectly fine to me and I will explain what I can and will probably stay until the timer runs out to get you that win if you are having trouble and we are wiping. I actually tend to enjoy doing a dungeon run with someone that is completely new to that content as long as they are actually trying because it makes it more challenging for me and I like the feeling of comradery that comes with it.

Not watching a video and wiping a party full of people who've done it before may be rude, but so is forcing your will onto someone else by forcing them to. There are 3 methods of learning: visual (watching a video), reading (Reading a written guide) and experience (going in blind). As was already said, not everyone can visually learn. Some people have better luck reading a written guide. I myself learn best by just going in and trying.

I suggest trying to not force your will (way of learning) onto random strangers. Not everyone learns from a video. But also, don't expect people to bend over backwards to teach. It's a two-way street named Compromise.
