It was tweaked in 2.2 but it still works, just requires an extra step.

Before Step 4 (when you move the tabletop item away then right-click to return it), make sure "Toggle counter surface placement on/off" is turned OFF.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, I'm a bit late to the party. I tried that trick last night trying to figure out how to have my stuff floating in midair. Somehow it didn't work for me at all. Did they "fix" this by now? Or am I too stupid to do it lol

nope still works...i have a turkey floating on my first floor as we speak. place an item on a desk or shelve, click off table top setting, click on item then hit esc to break connection then remove table or shelve.

Bump! This can also be done with wall partitions and the nice fireplaces!
