It's very discouraging when you go days without getting a drop. I went 20+ on Hullbreaker myself and I'd estimate at least 15 on AV.
But overall I'd say this is still one of the better steps of the relic quest. The endless FATE grinding of pre-nerf Atma, waiting on FATEs for Animus, the massive gil/time sink of getting good materia for Novus and being locked into one job for the Nexus grind were all far worse in my opinion.
Depends on how you look at it. Tedium above all else is what'll break it for me, and that's exactly what nexus farming was. Countless hours of nothing but hoping Garuda was the bonus and then farming her for 2 straight hours (as a bard no less). Sure that eventually was done, and that "eventually" was a month and a half later. I wouldn't say I was blessed with RNG with Zodiacs (longest spell being around 15 or so runs for Sastasha (Heroic), and on average 5 runs for the other dungeons), and I still neded up getting all my drops and being short around 600 tomestones for my last springwater.

if you didn't have 80k GC Seals by the time you finished the Nexus step, with all the primal weapons turn-in, you were doing something wrong xD
or... you were just spamming Cape Westwind *shudder*

Stone Vigil HM took me the longest so far. Wasn't counting but it was probably over 15+. I have a feeling this system keeps tanks longer specially if its an old dungeon, new people need to progress the story.
Right now I have 2 quest left. Im doing copper bell mine HM atm. But its true.. I have all my items already, and I just need to get these dungeon drops to complete this quest line.
"You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."
That's only applicable if you didn't already have the gc seals and tomes
if you've got all the gil,gc,sol items collected which most people usually somewhat anticipate

I just started collecting light for my Yoshimitsu Blades with about 250 so far. I already have 3 Sacred Spring Waters and 3 Bombard Cores with one of my retainers. I hope to have those done soon and will start to pick up the 4 vendor hand ins and start to look at the 8 craft-able ones too. I've started one of the 4 quests and have completed Wanderer's Palace. I'll be working in dungeons as I find the time to do them. The plan is to have all the Zodiac Quest needs done at about the same time I finish collecting light.
Dungeon drops can be elusive at times but I'd much rather run dungeons for drops than spam ST and other venues for light. I love the fact I can play on any role and get the Zodiac stuff done. it's certainly easier the second time around.

I started my zodiac chain just as the quest went live, so I didn't have the knowledge to save up GC seals for the bomb cores (I started with 2000 or so seals). You can't buy the spring waters either until you start the zodiac quest chains (nor did I stockpile soldiery before the patch, I started at like 500 as well). Top that off with the 2000 limit you can't really save up for more than a single spring water if you don't have sexus beforehand.
