New tank perspective, my apologies to established TNKs I've met B4

I just started tanking... Only now do I realize HOW BAD many DPS are at their jobs.
It is rare that I get a DPS that actually has any understanding or care for letting the tank control the mob.

More often than not the the DPS is off face pulling mobs, attacking an enemy I've only flashed, and pulling hate on an add I'm not focused on forcing me to run all over the place to try and regain control.

Wow, I never realized how crap so many DPS are.
I main WHM, I'm good at it, and have to admit I always was like wtf is with the crybaby tanks?
Well, now I know... They spend all day cleaning up after idiots.

The worst offender by far, ninjas.
    Second most retarded, BLM.

Every time I get a drg I am like thank god!
By far they are the best and most supportive DPS imo. A match with a ninja and a BLM is just an absolute mess, give me a drg and a mnk and the same dungeon run is smooth as butter.

Meh. Ninjas are the new Goons; they both deserve the reputation they've earned.* Not watching their aggro bar, pulling mobs they shouldn't, not supporting the healer when she gets aggro, etc.

As for BLM, you're way off. It is absolutely the Tanks responsibility to keep the aggro when BLMs are doing high AOE damage. That's the BLMs job.

*not saying all melee DPSers are imbeciles, just the 10% of them who play like they own the fight.

As someone who's slowly been working on tanking myself, I've found it depends more on the player, than the class/job. I've seen DRG that constantly attack other than marked targets, and draw aggro if I'm not watching carefully. I was swearing (mentally) at BRDs for a while for drawing aggro, but I mostly got used to it and on top of things.

It seems to me that the reasons why MNK and DRG don't have the same problems is because they don't have the same strong ranged attacks as the other jobs, so they're not launching those to start off before closing in. Instead, they're coming in a second or so behind, and most tanks already have their aggro established by the time they arrive. An impatient member of a job with a strong ranged attack to start, though, can mess things up in a hurry.

    it could be worse

you could be playing wow where they do awful damage, don't know how to play at all, and are only slightly more useful than someone who is afk

you're blessed, i'll take picking up extra trash and needing to do extra threat over that rap anyday

A lot of times people are level synced and forget how difficult dungeons can be for people that are actually leveling up.

When you get accustomed to 8 Mob pulls, 2-3 mobs in a pull seems easy. It is easy to forget. A lot of low level tanks don't flash enough either.

I recently went through this. If you flash every rotation keeping aggro on multiple targets becomes much easier.

I agree with a comment made earlier though. Range DPS has to be careful about attacking early, well all DPS truthfully, should give the tank a moment.

I've always wanted to be a good tank although there are many instances where i question myself what the hell is happening. OP hit the nail on how I currently learn how the game works - I level up the jobs I am trying to understand to get a feel on how they work and on how I can adjust when I get to party with them. In the past, I was once asked by a MNK to stop moving way too much. So I gave PUG a good hour or two spin and realized that they're heavily reliant on positioning. Now, I just move when it is really needed or try to move in a fashion where it will not disrupt their rotation.

I bet those DPS you are referring to are either trolling or hasn't touched any tanking class, ever.

But to be quite honest, I am a bit uneasy when I get to party with a terribad tank. It forces me to stop what I am doing so as not to steal aggro away from them. This list can go on for different roles.

Bottom-line, it's better for one to have, even just a tiny bit of, knowledge on things other than your preferred job rather than nitpicking and bitching on how others have failed to do so.

As a good tank your post just screams bad tanking, sorry, there's no other way to put it. You can't notice a mob's hp is dropping faster than whatever you decided to attack first, and switch to ensure hate is kept on it? OK.

This is the reason marking is such a useless thing; a good tank can hold hate on all mobs without it, and when cycling thru mobs, pay extra attention to whatever's in most need of additional threat generated.

thats a bit of a blanket statement
if both outgear you by a large amount and neither of them ever attack the same mob, then it doesnt matter how good you are
and at that point, its not the tanks fault, its the dps being lazy/rude/incompetent

This 100%. Now there are going to be asshats, we can't fix that. However as a tank you need to watch those HP bars. Cannot stress enough this comment. If one is dropping faster than yours and you ignore it, you will lose hate. I don't mark much as I can handle pretty much most mobs in the dungeons. Though I will mark atleast one that will be more threat or uses a powerful AoE to attack first. Like the wandering Aevis in Stone Vigil for example. Otherwise I won't bother marking and just keep an eye on those HP bars.

For the most part people will attack whatever gets lobbed/tomahawked first after that its pretty much a free for all, but you need to see what is dropping first and adjust. Communication is rare in dungeons and every may not be on the same page, but tanks are the leaders and need to realize this quickly and adjust. Now if you have a person running ahead of the group thats different, just let them die off, try talking to them, or maybe they will just learn an adjust their tactics or just leave the instance.
