It's been stated that they largely only want crafted gear to be dyeable, mostly to help increase the desireability of it (See also why to dye your artifact armor you need crafted reagents to transform it into a dyeable state)

Yes, but as I said, there are still tons of gears compare to the small number of crafted gear released each time. For example, Foestriker's Skirt is a great skirt, but the only dyeable one is Direwolf Skirt of Aiming and for ARC BRD only. Since Foestriker's Skirt is a only lv15 Legs, I do not think that SE will make it as a crafted gear any soon.

Sorry, I don't particularly feel like digging through months of dev posts; this is something that's been brought up throughout 2.0's lifespan a few times and was adressed fairly early. Doesn't mean it doesn't have the capacity to change, of course.

Note that it's not solely crafting only ever, but just largely crafted pieces - the Lightning Returns sets, for instance, are also dyeable. They also weren't on release, just like there wasn't a way to dye your AF initially. They don't seem likely to implement a sweeping change to previous gear but do seem willing to revisit specific sets for potential changes.

In before cash shop item that makes a non-dyeable gear dyeable.
