This is a good idea. To expand on it... Anytime you are buying something expensive, it is worth noting the city it's being sold out of by the sellers icon on the market board. You can then travel to that city's market board to make the purchase to avoid the tax. I think this also might prevent the seller from being taxed as well but not sure on that part.

The seller always pays the 5% tax. Just travel to the city of listing to avoid the buyers tax.
Still, much better than the 100% thief's tax. Trust no one, not even yourself!!

Alt transfers are particularly annoying in this game. There are a few workarounds. Passing stuff through a friend works if you have friends you trust. Selling to yourself through the MB works, though it costs a 5% tax each time. The other workaround some people use are private FCs. (That's the workaround I've been using myself lately.)

With an FC that has just your own alts as members, you can freely use the FC chest to transfer gil or items between them. Unfortunately, due to the rule that a character can only be in one FC, using it to connect your alts with each other like this prevents being able to use an FC for the normal, social reasons of connecting with other players in the game, but linkshells can fill in for that social aspect.

Oh, but if you want a private FC, you'll need to get someone to initially help you set it up, becoming a temporary member long enough to invite your other alts, since you can only invite players who are on while you are.
