I was under the impression that present day BLM and THM make use of power from the void, without making a deal with the devil (void sent) so to speak. I mean, don't we see the down side of that kind of deal during the THM quest line?
I get that the lore says that in the past, BLM and THM dealt more directly in darkness and the void, but unless I missed something that's not really the case anymore. Something that may set BLMs apart from Acians, who are clearly quite happy to deal with Voidsent.
I get your point, however, as you yourself imply, the void is a source of power, how you tap into that power would seem to make a difference between a BLM on the side of 'good' and a BLM on the bad side. Unless of course, you are suggesting that the aether from the void is inherently evil?
The larger point for me is that the story and context of our characters is fundamentally on the side of 'good', but player conduct, attitude, and to some extent, the gear are not always in harmony with that.
One of the reasons I do not play other MMORPGs, especially western ones, is that they take a much more realistic, morally ambiguous line; allowing players to be good, downright evil, or something in between. Not my cup of tea. FFXIV on the other hand with it's definitive PvE foundation, and 'protagonist is the good guy' story is more what I enjoy. However, it's a modern MMORPG, so there is raiding, gear grind and human nature at work, so many of the aspects of the games I dislike arepresent in a milder form here in Eorzea.
At least we do not have to worry about open world PvP and PKing, Warriors of light killing each other for personal gain...If thisgame ever incorporated open world PvP, I would unsub the day it was announced. But that is an aside, what I am getting at is that FF games can be boiled down to good vs evil, with the player/protagonist on the side of good. So it bothers me that so many players essentially ignore that, and that to some extent at least, the developers appear to cater to that.
By catering to that more abiguous player, I worry that the game may take a darker tone, and drift towards the type of MMORPG that I personaly do not like. So, I am raising my voice, and asking the question now - "Are we the good guys?", before that drift happens, in the hope of sparking discussion and debate, and to state my own feelings onthe matter of course.

What if I rather be bad?
That's your choice, but it does go against the story and structure of the game, so perhaps you might enjoy a game that allows you to take on that role, more than one that does not. I am NOT saying you should go play something else, nor that you should modify how you play, those are your personal decisions, it's just that this game does not support players taking that role.
I don't disagree but... Reality is subjective to every individual. While I would say there are certainly douche bag players here, they are the least common denominator. Focusing on that and them creates a reality of that. (What we think, we become)
Instead of talking about how terrible the terrible people are why not talk about how helpful the helpful and nice people are. Acknowledging these things would be the first step to making a better community. Square doesn't make the community, we do and we are responsible for it. A large portion of posts on this forum are people complaining and talking about how bad this or that was. This post is no exception. If you want the community to change for the positive you have to be a link in that chain or you are ultimately working against your own goal.
The bulk of people in this game are genuinely helpful and nice. Acknowledging that would go a long way as opposed to focusing on the negatives.
I like to pretend in cutscenes that Minfillia and everyone around us who are our 'friends' are secretly using us. Every compliment is actually an insult, but our characters are so socially inept we can't pick up on it. So we just nod.
"Najara, you're the best! We couldn't have done it without you." Yah bitch. You made me do everything, actually, so f*** you.
Also with the 2.4 Shiva patch everything is questionable.
Also I just read the OP and I realize nothing I just said is relevent. Oh well,

I use darkness to fight darkness because why not? They will not see it coming.
Nothing in the OP said the tank didn't know the class or job, the OP said they didn't do big pulls. Where exactly does it say "Must do big pulls to do ones job in game" Also, there's never a reason to be an asshat about it.You seem a little way into the RP aspect of the game. Realistically speaking you should know your class well enough by 41, which is stone vigil. It requires a bare minimum of skill, by which point you should have your rotations down. Now if you haven't put the time into learning your class, it isn't my job to spend 90minutes in a failed run to teach you. So either I'll leave or wait for someone to kick you.
The theme of corruption (or the risk of it) comes up a lot in the BLM/THM quest lines. I was left with the feeling that what I was using to ghost garleans wasn't entirely wholesome and good. That said, with DRK and BLM, it's more about what you do with the power that matters. So are we the good guys? Uh...sorta. I guess. I mean, we're less bad than the villains.
On the RP angle, I treat it a lot like you're meant to treat the storyline in WoW. The people doing all the fancy things (killing bahamut and the like) are the "heroes of light". RP Backstory wise, your characters are important, helping in a battle here or there, but the main action isn't you specifically.
I'm with Razzle on the ill behaved players btw. I meet very few actually rude players. Quiet ones sure, but actually rude? Not many.
Sure we do! You just don't call it that. It's "bringing peace"
Yeah, I noticed that "help others" wasn't really much of an option in the beginning. I'm here for the money.Game asked me if i want glory or power or riches, not if I want to be a saint. I am also getting paid; npcs treats me as a mercenary most of the time. Game also showed me that other adventurers can take my jerbs. There were npc adventurers that lost out on a job cause i did it first and the dungeon loot were already cleaned out by me. They were dissapointed obviously. So really, you are all competition to me...unless you are helping and passing on loot!
