Tanking w/ High ilvl dps

So last night I got my Paladin to lvl50, I don't have a ton of gear for him so I am only ilvl85. I was doing the first relic quest to get him the Wep/shield and found keeping hate on the primals near impossible...

I never had a lot of issues in dungeons etc but found the dps were just putting out way to much dmg... Provoke/flash helped for about a few seconds before I lost hate again.

Anyone have any tips I guess, It was super stressful haha? And has anyone else experienced this..? Or am I mental.

As an undergeared lvl 50 tank you will not be able to hold hate from geared DPS. Your best bets would be to improve your weapon ASAP or wear strength accessories to increase your threat at the cost of VIT. Weapon damage will have a far greater effect than adding strength.

I see, Although we won all the fights, It made me feel pretty useless and I spent the better part of the night upgrading his gear. Still only ilvl91 but the better the gear I get, the easier it should be for the endgame content.

All you can really do is gear up and try to be on top of things as best you can. Mark a target and ask DPS to single-target since that's where you best enmity modifier is (Halone). Tell people you're new and ask for them to help ya out.

Weapon damage is king of damage output so make a high-level weapon a priority.
Using strength accessories or changing bonus to strength will help - but a lower ilevel you'll need to pay some attention to your HP levels.

Find a way to get an i100+ weapon fast or you will struggle very hard holding hate against anyone that is i110+

Farm on your geared job until it is at an acceptable gear level to run current content.

At the HQ primals for the relic quest there will hopefully be another tank with better gear doing a trial roulette, you can become Off Tank and don't need to get hate.

The ilvl110 weapon with Unidentified Allagan Tomestone and Sands of Time is not difficult to get with Syrcus Tower. ST drops ilvl 100 gear, so a good place to upgrade your gear too.

I'll agree with Syrcus Tower. There enough other Tanks there that you shouldn't need to tank a boss if you don't want to, and anything you obtain there will be an upgrade.

You'd think that but so many lazy tanks in ST... Had a tank at bare minimum ilvl and i55 sword forced to tank ST on one run because the other tanks just flat out refused to do it. Little fresh Lala tank did his best. And did a relatively good job considering the sword he was using.

To the OP if you can farm soldiery on another class and get an i100 weapon for your tank it'll help immensely.

Might want to run some STR accessories until you've got a decent weapon. If you're losing hate with FoF > Shield Lob > CoS > 1 > SW > 2 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 3 > etc there's nothing you can do but gear up further or ask your significantly more geared team mates to give you a GCD or two before they start. Realistically, if you don't have an i110 weapon/gear you're not running anything with a threatening enrage/phase timer anyway so there's nothing wrong with waiting.

That or roll with a better geared tank and off-tank on your journey to better gear.
