I'm ~1000 tomestones away from finishing Excalibur and I must say it's pretty disappointing to see what has become of the relic quest line. Ignoring 1.0 (where it was significantly tougher), the quest started out as something that was moderately challenging for the gear and player skill level at the time. It had two bosses that were made specifically for the quest and you had to kill three pieces of somewhat relevant content. After that, though, we got
-farm tomestones from Wanderer's Palace to upgrade to i90
-farm FATEs to upgrade to 100
-farm tomestones from Wanderer's Palace and then do a bunch of low level dungeons to actually upgrade stats to 100
-farm "expert" dungeons for alexandrite and tomestones to infuse materia
-farm more low tier junk for light
-go farm the same stuff you already farmed but also get 6400 tomestones and a bunch of easy synths
For whatever reason, all of the bosses for the relic line are at the beginning of the quest chain. It feels a bit backwards. I'm really surprised, too, that they've completely neglected to use any Crystal Tower zones and First/Second Coil. With the echo the coils are pretty much a joke, but they're still more fitting than "go do Wanderer's Palace a few times...again."
Seriously the whole quest after the first one was made for Duty Finder. Pretty dumb.

I kind of agree with op as i fear that in 3.0 and beyond SE might pull this super rng grind again. in the live letter they'll be like, from the feedback we got from the community we are looking into ways in making the new relic quest line less rng based as we know players are getting frustrated with the unbalanced luck among each other.
Ofc we won't get this and will most likely get
1) craft relic wep base
2) if they keep materia, meld it
3) do something with items or tokens etc.
4) probs beat new primals cuz they wanna get ppl motivated to do the new primals.
5) farm stuff
6) run new dungeons
7) desynth or something
I mean what can they possibly do that they haven't done already, even tho some of them were poorly executed.
Expansion = changes changes changes. If they can't change that simple routine then a lot of ppl r gonna be quite mad imo as they paid more money for the same type of bs they had back before expac lol.
Its pretty obvious that SE simply can't pump out new content quick enough at the rate people are eating it up, so the whole RNG thing is just a way to slow everyone down and also keep low level content viable so new players aren't stuck in no mans land...compared to the nexus stage, its nowhere near as grindy...getting lights is hella boring and your stuck playing the same class, atleast is doesn't cost any gil though :P
Don't grind. Take it slow. You are not in a hurry.
Honestly, my problem with Relic is that for the work involved to get one, it should ALWAYS ALWAYS be best in slot, no exceptions. At least 10 iLVL over the next weapon choice and NOT the other way around as it is now.
Yes, there is work involved in getting the coil weapons, especially for the third coil...but groups are clearing this stuff fairly quickly. We're not talking the elite of the elite..we're talking anyone with any competence and 7 friends of similar ability. The only thing keeping players from getting better and farming it up and getting all the gear they want is the weekly lockout. (and artificial wall)
In short, the hours you have to put in to study/figure out the third coil and acquire the current BiS weapon (at 135) is not at all on par with the amount of hours required to get the current relic (iLVL125).. therefore why would you ever waste time doing relic unless you just want to have the item for glamor.
I kind of like the current zodiac quest, it feels like a proper quest with a variety of tasks. The part I don't like is obviously the low chance drop rate on dungeon drops.
The problem is, Yoshida doesn't want to "stress" the playerbase... Which result in decisions like "grinding your casual contents while adding ton of RNG related to it", meanwhile for less rng involved we could had got things like "killing all ex primals, Nael, fcob turn X, etc" in order to finish the last steps of our relics.
You guys and girls have to understand something simpleIt's either :
a) huge grindfest on easy and casual contents + deep gils sink.
b) challenge on midcore/raider contents, once a time completion, only skill involved, proving to the game that you are "worthy" to own your reward.
c) a decent mix of both.
So, what do you prefer? Huge RNG grind-fests or to be a bit "stressed" and have to work into endgame contents for side quests like relic weapons.
I think relic is pretty worth it if 130 poetic weapon is horrible like summoner have 51 accuracy 36 spellspeed. You get too much accuracy and u can replace that overflowing accuracy only with spellspeed and spellspeed is almost useless stat for summoners. And second thing is that you save 1300 poetics and you can buy something else with that. In FCOB progress that new relic is pretty usefull before you get that 135 weapon.
