Reinhart did ask some good questions on the Japanese forum (I won’t get mad that he bypassed his friends here…) so here are the official details we can offer up. Some of it has been addressed elsewhere previously, but doesn't hurt to have it one place.

Not an overabundance of details to share, but you can expect further details will be posted in the forums and topics in the near future. Hopefully you guys can hold out a bit longer!

How will your own weapons/armor turn into materia? Through using them a lot and reaching a certain point, will they turn into materia?
That’s right. Here are the steps:

    1) When you have the weapon/armor equipped, you will accumulate attachment points.
    2) Once you have accumulated a certain amount of attachment points, you will be given the option to turn the equipment into materia.

However, there is certain equipment that you will be unable to convert into materia.

    Will materia be removable?
By speaking with an NPC, you can have materia removed from your equipment.
In this instance, you will retain your equipment, but the materia that was removed will disappear.

Can weapons that have been infused through materia craft be turned into materia again? Is this limited to one time only? Or can this be done multiple times?
You can turn equipment into materia as many times as you want.

It has been stated that "equipment with materia can be traded," but I believe that "materia can be traded by itself" has not been confirmed.
Equipment with materia attached and materia itself can be traded.
However, as usual, "Untradeable" items cannot be traded.

*Keep in mind, some terminology may not be finalized, so don’t hold me to it when the Localization guys came up with fancier terms than the above!

I know people might hate this suggestion but will you need 100% durability on the gear in order to turn it to materia. I feel like it would be necessary to have this requirement since it would allow crafters to be more useful and part of the community. If you don't do this I feel you might be missing an opportunity in which crafters can be more useful and in a game where you are trying to make all disciplines have a unique experience, if the player so well chooses to focus on one discipline they can play it and enjoy it as much as any other discipline.

As another suggestion when materia is implemented I feel like you should allow for people to search for request of materia change through the MW, so crafters can go into the ward and repair said weapon so that they can turn it into materia. I hope you aren't going to make materia a concept where it's just the player can do everything to turn it into materia and they only need to seek out a crafter to infuse it into a piece of armor.

Do the points start to accumulate once the materia system is in place, or are those points being tracked already?

Considering no such system was even conceived when the game released I'm going to assume we are not accruing any points yet.
