Reinhart did ask some good questions on the Japanese forum (I won’t get mad that he bypassed his friends here…) so here are the official details we can offer up. Some of it has been addressed elsewhere previously, but doesn't hurt to have it one place.

Not an overabundance of details to share, but you can expect further details will be posted in the forums and topics in the near future. Hopefully you guys can hold out a bit longer!

How will your own weapons/armor turn into materia? Through using them a lot and reaching a certain point, will they turn into materia?
That’s right. Here are the steps:

    1) When you have the weapon/armor equipped, you will accumulate attachment points.
    2) Once you have accumulated a certain amount of attachment points, you will be given the option to turn the equipment into materia.

However, there is certain equipment that you will be unable to convert into materia.

    Will materia be removable?
By speaking with an NPC, you can have materia removed from your equipment.
In this instance, you will retain your equipment, but the materia that was removed will disappear.

Can weapons that have been infused through materia craft be turned into materia again? Is this limited to one time only? Or can this be done multiple times?
You can turn equipment into materia as many times as you want.

It has been stated that "equipment with materia can be traded," but I believe that "materia can be traded by itself" has not been confirmed.
Equipment with materia attached and materia itself can be traded.
However, as usual, "Untradeable" items cannot be traded.

*Keep in mind, some terminology may not be finalized, so don’t hold me to it when the Localization guys came up with fancier terms than the above!

No, I'm pretty sure the idea is that after you do it a few times (guessing with the "few") it'll be near-certain fail, followed by certain fail.

You should also add the option to destroy the equipment and remove the materia assuming there'll be a select few ultra rare materias obtainable.

From the way it was stated, am I right in thinking that when you "convert" equipment into materia, you lose the equipment and it becomes a piece of materia? That's what I'm getting from this at the moment, at least (I've been confused as to whether this was the case, or it simply produces the materia at that point, keeping both original equipment and materia).

I know people might hate this suggestion but will you need 100% durability on the gear in order to turn it to materia. I feel like it would be necessary to have this requirement since it would allow crafters to be more useful and part of the community. If you don't do this I feel you might be missing an opportunity in which crafters can be more useful and in a game where you are trying to make all disciplines have a unique experience, if the player so well chooses to focus on one discipline they can play it and enjoy it as much as any other discipline.

As another suggestion when materia is implemented I feel like you should allow for people to search for request of materia change through the MW, so crafters can go into the ward and repair said weapon so that they can turn it into materia. I hope you aren't going to make materia a concept where it's just the player can do everything to turn it into materia and they only need to seek out a crafter to infuse it into a piece of armor.

This kind of cool concept ^^
We didn't have materia system in any FF series since FF7.
And most of all, it's the best Gear-Sink concept too

I am a lil bit behind on all the materia info, and my question wasn't covered by Bayhone so here it is:

Before we convert our gear into Materia, will we be able to see which Materia it will turn into? Or will this be a blind conversion? It would suck to change gear into Materia, only to find out after the fact that you would have wished to not change it but can't change it back.

I'm not really a fan of this system. I obviously don't want to turn my +3 crab bow into materia so I will be forced to grind mobs with an NQ to make materia for my +3. Surely there's a way of doing this without creating a grindfest.
