No, but it gives you an advantage. You can use the money sold from the bracelets to buy crafted-melded gear, demimateria for Crafter Books, Novus or just flat out pay someone to clear it for you.

That's exaclty what it is.
It's free/10$/20$ for one bracelet. And to be sure you will have what you paid for, both bracelet have to be the same. Therefore if you paid yours 20$ your lover should do the same.

Oh my god that makes things so much clearer. I don't see a reason to pay $20 per person for the platinum plan for a few more choices, IMO but to each their own. There's a nice table that explains the differences between the plans here.
* You can only receive one promiste wristlet per application. Both you and your partner must acquire promise wristlets to undertake the quest "The Ties that Bind." You can either purchase wristlets separately, or one person can buy both and give one to his or her partner.
* Please be warned that, when equipped, these items can gain spiritbond. A promise wristlet cannot be traded once it gains spiritbond.
* In the event both you and your partner have different promise wristlets equipped, the wristlet of lesser value (standard < gold < platnium) will take priority when making arrangements for the ceremony.

Guess you have your gil option since they are tradeable.
I see. So if you own the bracelet it means you can perform the relevant ceremony. However, if people can buy these cash shop items and sell them then that helps remove the paywall barrier meaning people who don't want to pay can buy it using gil.
If you look at it another way, if you're marrying someone you love, a little money spent goes a long way to show your commitment :P
Oh who am I kidding, I don't know how to justify any cash shop system for a pay to play game. I concede the debate.

Any female miqotes want to marry me?

Looks like you both have to buy it, I kind of rushed to buy the platinum wedding without realising this too ^^; I probably would still have bought the Platinum one regardless, but it does say on the eternal bond site you need a bracelet each, and if you have different tier bracelets the lowest value one is the ceremony you'll get.

Isn't it a waste of money if you buy higher tier but you partner doesn't, since it uses the lower tier one?
